DOOM Mod Combines Game With Spaceballs | Game Rant

DOOM Eternal is the latest game in a long-running franchise that helped to define the first-person shooter genre as it's known today. Though that recent id Software title saw review bombing for controversial anti-cheat software that has been reversed, the series' legacy has certainly not been tarnished. Fans continue to show their love for the original DOOM titles, which have gone on to receive dedicated modding scenes.

One such mod that released features a collection of 10 maps designed for the 24th installment in a community series called Doomer Boards Projects (DBP) with a rather odd theme: The 1987 Mel Brooks satire Spaceballs. The classic comedy parodying Star Wars, alongside other sci-fi films like Alien, stars Bill Pullman as a Han Solo-esque Lone Starr who alongside his humanoid canine partner Barf (John Candy) has to rescue Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) from the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and his planet-destroying Mega Maid.

The Spaceballs "sequel" mod project for DOOM 2 was spearheaded by a Doomer who goes by xvertigox but features work from nine different modders all collected into one game, replicating locations and sprites from the Brooks film. A trailer was created by one of the modders, Glenzinho, which was uploaded to the Doomer Boards forum Sunday alongside the project's download link.

While the idea of basing a 2020 DOOM 2 mod on a Mel Brooks comedy is odd to say the least, xvertigox promises an experience "full of heart stopping space scrapping non-stop total ball popping action" that is "screening now in reputable forums near you." It certainly speaks to the creative possibilities that old-school DOOM players can achieve, as was also recently seen through a DOOM 2 mod that added Isabelle from Animal Crossing.

The original iconic DOOM games have led to other impressive fan-driven projects in recent months. For instance a Reddit user created a realistic render of Doomguy from the UI of the MS-DOS games to see how greatly the original design differs from his appearances in id Software's recent revivals.

While modifying DOOM is a tried-and-true tradition dating back to even licensed conversion titles like Chex Quest, more modern games also have robust modding scenes that offer plenty of reasons to keep playing them. An impressive mod put out for Grand Theft Auto 5 makes it compatible with exercise bikes, and seeing these kinds of projects emerge really proves that the sky is the limit for talented modders.
