Escape From Tarkov Will Be Handing Out Twitch Drops Again
Nowadays, many games would not have half the recognition they have without Twitch. The survival game Escape from Tarkov, for example, made its name through stellar viewership figures on Twitch. And now, developer Battlestate Games announced that it will be starting a second round of loot drops on Twitch.
While games like Valorant drew in viewers who were desperate to join the shooter's exclusive closed beta, Escape from Tarkov made powerful gear its selling point. Although the survival sim's presence on Twitch has somewhat waned, Battlestate may be looking to recapture the buzz it generated last December.
In a recent tweet, Battlestate Games announced the return of Twitch drops and laid out the requirements to earn new loot by watching Escape from Tarkov streams. According to a post on the game's official website, players only need to link their game profiles with their Twitch accounts and start watching streams. While only designated streamers will offer drops from June 11-20, every streamer will offer drops from June 21-22. Battlestate also teased "expansions" to the list as time went on. As for the reasons behind this event, the developer said it will help with "load testing" and with gathering feedback.
Unfortunately, this decision was met with trepidation from fans. Responses to the Twitter announcement cited the potential that a glut of rare gear from Twitch drops might break the in-game economy. Others said it was way too early to drop valuable items. One Twitter user suggested that Battlestate instead drop "barter goods" or cosmetics. Battlestate may be compensating by not marking these dropped goods as "found in raid," which is a label gear needs to be sold in-game at a higher value. However, the developer's decision might make the Twitch event less appealing to viewers looking to get ahead by selling their gear.
Overall, while Twitch can be a powerful promotional tool for smaller games, developers should not rely too much on the platform to boost its fanbase. However, reports that Battlestate is actively banning cheaters indicate that Escape from Tarkov's creators are in touch with its community's needs. Hopefully, the developer is able to assuage player concerns as this event continues.
Escape from Tarkov is available now for PC.
