Fortnite May Be Teasing an Aquaman Skin | Game Rant
After multiple delays, the most recent of which in solidarity with ongoing Black Lives Matter protests around the world, Epic Games' battle royale Fortnite is finally preparing to launch its third season of content thanks to a Doomsday Event that submerged the game's map earlier today. The idea of an underwater-focused Season 3 for Fortnite has been teased for some time now, and a series of tweets by the game's official social media account may have confirmed that skins based on DC Comics' Aquaman will be part of the new content.
The idea of Aquaman appearing in Fortnite first surfaced thanks to leaks in May that also suggested ridable sharks will be a new feature. Today the game's Twitter posted an image of some golden object that could be seen through a zoomed-in camera lens, and about an hour later it retweeted a post by Brazilian Fortnite-focused YouTuber and streamer Melany Lee that depicts a more clear image of a golden trident.
The trident does resemble Jason Momoa's from the DCEU film Aquaman, and it would not be unprecedented for Epic Games to feature a superhero property, as one of the hallmarks in Fortnite Season 2 was skins and weapons based on Marvel's Deadpool. That said, the Aquaman connection is based on unconfirmed leaks, so the trident could just as easily be a reference to Greek mythology's Poseidon, or other popular culture characters like King Triton from The Little Mermaid.
No doubt this kind of speculation and anticipation is part of what Epic Games wants, otherwise it would be more up-front with its content teasers. Some have even guessed that Fortnite will add SpongeBob SquarePants content in-line with the underwater themes based on previous marketing materials.
While much of the theorizing has been based around major crossovers that Fortnite could add in Season 3, there has also been plenty of thought put into what self-referential ideas could be added. For instance, one fan theory suggested that a returning character named The Visitor may be involved with the map flooding — though this theory primarily focused on today's Doomsday Event.
Whether or not characters like Aquaman are added into Fortnite, fans of the game only have a few more days until the long-awaited new Season begins to find out. No matter what happens, it should be interesting to see how dramatically Fortnite changes going forward.
Fortnite is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
