Ghostwire: Tokyo and Deathloop are PS5 Console Exclusives
With E3 2020 canceled in light of the pandemic, Bethesda announced that the publisher would not be holding a digital event this year and would instead showcase its upcoming lineup of games at other events, including the PlayStation 5 gameplay event earlier today. Full of exciting first-party games such as Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon 2: Forbidden West, Sony also gave players an in-depth look at two upcoming Bethesda published titles including Ghostwire: Tokyo and DEATHLOOP.
Interestingly enough, while Ghostwire: Tokyo and DEATHLOOP were thought to be multiplatform games coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One, the PlayStation 5 gameplay event revealed a fascinating detail that no-one saw coming: both games will be PlayStation 5 console exclusives, with the latter due out this holiday season. Bethesda is yet to confirm the finer details like release dates and special editions, however, PlayStation fans certainly have a lot to look forward to from third-party studios.
DEATHLOOP was first announced during Bethesda's E3 2019 press conference and is being developed by Arkane Studios, the developer behind the popular Dishonored series, as well as the 2017 reboot of Prey. The game takes place on a mysterious island called Blackreef, where players take on the role of two extraordinary assassin's, Colt and Julianna. Colt's mission is to put an end to the endless time-loop that has trapped the island, while Julianna's goal is to kill Colt and keep the loop in place. DEATHLOOP features a combination of abilities including advanced weaponry, and "otherworldly powers" that appears to be very reminiscent of Dishonored 2.
Ghostwire: Tokyo is a stunning action-adventure game coming from the brilliant mind of Shinji Mikami and his team at Tango Softworks, the developer behind The Evil Within 2. Due to release on PC and PlayStation 5 in 2021, in Ghostwire: Tokyo players are tasked with saving Tokyo from paranormal spirits that have taken the city under siege and discovering what really happened to the cities population, before the disappearance. Stepping away from pure survival-horror, Ghostwire: Tokyo will still feel a lot like what players are used to from Tango Softworks and the team isn't afraid to keep players on the edge of their seats.
Considering Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 are still years away from release, Ghostwire: Tokyo and DEATHLOOP are currently the only big games players can expect from Bethesda during the first year of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. While it's entirely possible Besthesda could still have at least a couple of games in development yet to be announced, Microsoft needs to look at other third-party studios urgently and start building out a stronger portfolio of exclusives if it really wants to compete with what Sony is doing with the PlayStation 5.
DEATHLOOP will be released on PC and PS5 in Holiday 2020.
