Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Eighth Heroine Explained | Game Rant
Nintendo reinvented The Legend of Zelda franchise with the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in March of 2017, a critical and commercial success for the publisher and the highest-selling game in the long-running franchise. Taking from successful open-world games before it, Breath of the Wild offered players an exciting sandbox full of wonder and mystery, forcing players to go out and explore every corner of the map to complete the story, locate shrines, or just to see what might be waiting for them around the corner.
One mystery that remains prevalent in the Breath of the Wild community to this day is the Eighth Heroine of Gerudo. What began as a simple Shrine Quest led to years of fan theories and speculation about the mysterious eighth protector of the Gerudo people, who she was, and what happened to get her kicked out by the Seven Heroines. Wondering what any of this means? Let's dive into the Seven Heroines and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's biggest mystery to date.
In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Hyrule contains a total of 120 Shrines for players to complete, and while the majority can be found through exploration, there are 42 Shrines that require players to complete a Shrine Quest first. The Seven Heroines is a Shrine Quest located in the Gerudo Wasteland that players must complete in order to unlock the Korsh O'Hu Shrine. To start the quest, players will need to speak with Rotana who lives in a small house next to The Noble Canteen in Gerudo Town. Rotana will talk of some ruins located to the East of Gerudo Town, not too far from the Wasteland Tower. There are seven large statues in the ruins, standing in a circle, and players need to locate six orbs and place them in the centre, corresponding with the symbols on each statue to unlock the Shrine.
The seven statues in the questline are said to represent the seven Gerudo Heroines, protectors of Gerudo that each represent an important quality to the Gerudo people: skill, spirit, endurance, knowledge, flight, motion, and gentleness. In Breath of the Wild, the Gerudo constructed the ruins as a memorial for the Seven Heroines; however, it's believed that a Shiekah Monk by the name of Korsh O'hu, a servant of the Goddess Hylia, secretly played a role behind the scenes in creating the construction of the statues as a puzzle to hide the Shrine. For completing the Shrine, Link is rewarded with Korsh O'hu's Blessing and receives a Flamespear and Spirit Orb.
The Seven Heroines of Gerudo are well known and talked of by the time of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, yet the Gerudo people als0 talk of their having been a potential Eighth Heroine. If players dress Link in the Gerudo woman's clothes outfit and approach a character named Bozai in Gerudo Town, believing that Link is female Bozai will flirt with Link and give him a pair of Snow Boots, before telling Link about the myth of an eighth goddess statue. After talking with Bozai, player's will have access to a brand new side quest called 'The Eighth Heroine.'
Using the new snow boots, travel North West of the Gerudo Highlands to a deep valley located between the Risoka Snowfield and Hemaar's Descent. Take a photo of the Goddess statue with the Camera Rune and return to Bozai to complete the side quest. Link finding the statue proves that there was, in fact, an Eighth Heroine in Gerudo, however, her history with the Seven is left unclear. It's believed that some sort of conflict with the Seven Heroines or potentially her followers, led the Eighth Heroine to be left out of the group and segregated from history. After completing the side quest, an adventure log in-game reads: "There's a legend about seven heroines in the Gerudo region, but it turns out that an eighth heroine existed, and she is worshipped to this day by her faithful in the Gerudo Highlands."
Outside of the upcoming Paper Mario: The Origami King, Nintendo is yet to reveal any plans for first-party releases throughout the remainder of 2020 and beyond. According to a recent earnings call, it doesn't look like the highly-anticipated The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 will be releasing for Nintendo Switch anytime soon. Unfortunately, this means it could be quite some time before we learn anything more about the mysterious Eighth Heroine of Gerudo or Hyrule's many other intriguing mysteries.
