5 Best Fallout 4 Companions To Have (& 5 Worst) | Game Rant
Each companion in the Fallout series is unique, though some are better (or simply more personable) than the other companions. The companions in Fallout 4 are definitely among some of the most fleshed-out and interesting. Companions found across the Commonwealth can complement both morally upstanding and evil playthroughs, and also offer unique perks and abilities that can help the player as they explore Boston.
While there is nothing wrong with any of the companions found in the game, some are bound to fit a given player's play style more. A majority of the characters also offer a unique quest, allowing the player to get to know them and their history a little better. Without further ado, let's check out the best and worst companions in the game.
10 Worst: Strong
Strong is a Super Mutant that can be found if the player frees him from a cell during the quest Curtain Call. While it might sound handy to have a Super Mutant around to help out, there are some drawbacks to this. Strong can only wear certain armors, which the player must loot from other Super Mutants, and he can only use weapons other Super Mutants use.
Strong's companion perk also only helps the player if they use melee weapons more often than other weapons. Strong also has a weird range of likes and dislikes, disliking when the player heals Dogmeat but liking it when the player purchases a dog.
9 Best: Longfellow
Longfellow is the only permanent companion the player can get during the Far Harbor DLC. Longfellow will give the player help as they travel around the island and battle enemies. His companion perk is also useful, as it will cause the player to take 25% less damage from animals found on the island.
As expected, Longfellow will become hostile if the player destroys the town of Far Harbor. If the player sides with the town, they can learn about Longfellow's past and why he lives outside of the town. He is a pleasant companion to travel the lonely island with.
8 Worst: Codsworth
Codsworth is the robotic servant of the Sole Survivor from before the Great War and will most likely be the first companion the player has. Codsworth is a Mister Handy robot, meaning he will have to get close to foes to damage them. Despite this, he is most likely going to replaced by most.
With the number of other companions the player is sure to find, Codsworth will most likely be forgotten about quickly. Codsworth does have a few pluses to him -- the player can put a hat on him, and Codsworth can call the player by silly names. He has the charm factor going for him, but little else.
7 Best: Piper Wright
Piper Wright is a journalist living in Diamond City that can become a companion after the player completes an interview with her. Piper has the benefit of giving the player healable items, such as Nuka-Cola and sweet rolls. She also has a history of getting herself into and out of tough situations, making her a good fighter.
Piper's companion perk is also useful, as it will give players double XP when they successfully persuade someone and when they find a new location. With most characters disliking Piper's journalistic ways, traveling with her will also provide humorous dialogue.
6 Worst: Curie
Curie is a companion who is first found inside of Vault 81 during the quest Hole in the Wall. When first met, Curie is a Miss Nanny robot. Curie only becomes a good companion when her mind is transferred into a synth body.
Until Curie enters a synth body, she has to fight enemies up close and can become downed easily. This can be a hassle and cause players to trade her out for a new companion.
5 Best: Robert MacCready
MacCready will be recognized as the mayor of Little Lamplight by dedicated fans of the Fallout series. It is an interesting change to see MacCready go from an immature child to an adult who cares deeply about his family. MacCready has grown up in the wasteland and was part of the Gunners, making him a companion who can fight well.
MacCready is able to be commanded to steal items, and he also gives the player a perk when he reaches the highest affinity which boosts hit percentages for headshots by 20% in VATS. Raising MacCready's affinity should be easy, as stealing and picking locks will raise it.
4 Worst: X6-88
x6-88 is an Institute courser that can become the player's companion. As a courser, x6-88 is a good fighter, and the only downside is the player must be sided with the Institute to have him as a companion.
If the player attacks synths found in the Commonwealth, X6 will become hostile to the player. If brought into the Railroad headquarters, X6 will also become hostile and attack Railroad agents until either he or everyone else is killed.
3 Best: Hancock
Hancock is the ghoul mayor of Goodneighbor, perhaps best known for the unique outfit that he wears. Hancock can give the player chems and his companion perk is one of the more useful ones. The perk makes it so when the player has 250 rads, their critical meter fills up 20% faster.
Hancock also offers humorous dialogue when traveling, such as when the player is not wearing any clothes and travels to a new city. Hancock will mention he enjoys the view and may call the player "emperor." He is also witty, responding with appropriate snark to characters who mention his ghoul appearance.
2 Worst: Dogmeat
Dogmeat is one of the first companions the player will meet and can be used to retrieve items found around the player. No matter what the player does, Dogmeat will love them and will never dislike anything that is done.
With this in mind, having a different companion would be a better idea. The player would have more luck dressing Dogmeat up and letting him stay inside of a settlement, away from the dangers of the Commonwealth.
1 Best: Nick Valentine
Nick Valentine is the synth detective that is found by the player inside of Vault 114. Valentine is able to hack terminals for the player, bypassing the need to guess the password. He is also a fan of doing good, which can help the player if they are trying to walk the straight and narrow for a given playthrough.
Valentine's companion perk is useful, as it gives the player an extra chance when hacking a terminal and reduces the lockout time by half. He also has higher hit points than other companions, making him pretty decent in a fight.
