God of War PS5 Reveal Rumors Shot Down by Game Director
The Internet has recently been abuzz with rumors that God of War fans can expect a God of War PS5 game to be revealed soon, based on speculation from unnamed sources that Sony is planning a fall 2021 release date which will be announced sometime in August. However, Santa Monica Studio's Game Director Cory Barlog appears to have stomped out these rumors with a dismissive take on social media.
Earlier today, Barlog posted his reaction to, "Looking at some of the news over the last 24 hours" on Twitter: A gif of Devastator from the old-school Transformers cartoon laughing before saying "no" to said news. Though the post is vague enough that it could theoretically be in reference to anything, the widespread nature of this recent God of War sequel rumor publicized by the YouTube channel Moore's Law is Dead does not leave a whole lot of room for interpretation.
The success of 2018's God of War, a soft reboot of the already popular franchise dating back to 2005, has left many PlayStation fans excited to see what will be coming next from Santa Monica Studio. Other rumors have suggested God of War (2018) will come to PC following Guerrilla Games' Horizon Zero Dawn, which has received a similar level of acclaim on the PS4 and officially has a sequel called Horizon Forbidden West in development for the PS5.
The Horizon Zero Dawn sequel was announced during Sony's "Future of Gaming" livestream in June, alongside highly-anticipated titles such as Insomniac Games' Spider-Man: Miles Morales, as well as the grand unveiling of the PS5 and its digital-only variant. Many expected a new God of War game to be announced during the PS5 event last month, but there was no such luck and official news about the game has been sparse ever since.
That being said, Santa Monica Studio does have side-projects related to God of War in the works. For instance, a God of War children's book called B is for Boy will be released in September that offers a more humorous take on the hit game's story in the guise of an ABC-learning story.
The studio's developers have also been active on social media doing more than just shooting down rumors and speculation. Art Director Raf Grassetti is working on X-Men artwork as a personal project, which should offer fans of God of War's artistic style something to follow while waiting for a potential sequel or PC port announcement.
God of War is available now, exclusively for PlayStation 4.
