Halo: The Master Chief Collection Update Adds Weapon and Vehicle Skins to Combat Evolved
It's hard to overstate how important Bungie's Halo franchise has been for the console-based first-person shooter genre as it is known today, so it was a big deal when Halo: The Master Chief Collection was announced to be releasing on PC. That title has been updated over time with more games, leading to Halo 3 trending on Twitter when it was surprise launched today. However, Halo 3 is not the only new feature that has been added to The Master Chief Collection, according to its latest patch notes.
One of the most unique additions is a full-fledged customization option for the original Halo: Combat Evolved. Players can activate multiplayer skins for their Spartan's visors, as well as weapons and vehicles, both on the UNSC and Covenant side. These are only aesthetic, and they can be turned off for those who want to keep the original experience pure.
In the MCC Development Update posted today on Halo Waypoint, Design Director Max Szlagor said the team wanted to bring a greater level of customization to titles in The Master Chief Collection that did not have them, so "players can have their uniqueness in each game." To that end, the team has also updated Halo 3 so players can customize each individual piece of their character's armor with different colors, both Spartans and Elites, and these changes can be viewed with full 3D character renders.
The team at 343 Industries made changes to various games in the collection that are not limited to aesthetics. For instance, Halo 3 has added a new Acrophobia skull that gives Master Chief a jetpack; Forge mode has been added to Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo: Reach on PC; and multiple titles have received audio updates.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection has helped keep the seminal, long-running FPS series alive and well during the wait for the highly-anticipated Halo Infinite. However, it is not the only project Microsoft has in development, as Showtime is working on a live-action Halo TV series that spent more than $41.3 million last year.
While fans of the franchise are playing Halo 3 on PC and getting their hands on new customizable skins for Halo: Combat Evolved, new information about the next-generation title should be coming soon. Microsoft announced an Xbox Series X event for July 23, during which it will show off Halo Infinite gameplay for the first time.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection is available now on PC and Xbox One.
