Modern Warfare Study Reveals Which Maps Appear the Most
Every season introduces new maps into the multiplayer rotation in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. With no built-in mechanic to vote for certain maps, the game will automatically rotate through a series of locations that are semi-randomized. Modern Warfare fans are left to the randomization with little control, but one fan started tracking the map rotation.
It did not take long for this Reddit user to notice that some maps are being picked more than others. All of the data they gathered was taken between the Season 4 release date and the Season 4 Reloaded patch. They tracked 100 matches of Search and Destroy games and only counted full maps, leaving out any joined in progress queues.
Although 100 matches isn't an insane amount, it does serve as a decent sample size for determining a pattern in the match map selection system. The first eight games played by Reddit user IamEclipse were all on separate maps. He had a chance to play on 18 different maps total, but it should be noted that Aniyah Incursion and Shipment never came up.
This suggests that they are not currently in the core Search and Destroy rotation. Early in the run, Grazna Raid appeared six times within the first 40 matches and then never made another appearance. Other than that, most maps made frequent appearances with every map making up less than 10% of the total rotation.
The map that appeared the most was Arklov Peak. Throughout the entire experiment, no map appeared more than twice in a row suggesting that the map randomization was fairly balanced when it came to fair selections. The only problem that IamEclipse had with the data was that Piccadilly came up 7 times. As one of the most disliked Modern Warfare maps, he felt that no one should have to play Piccadilly 7% of the time and would have preferred to see it at a lower number.
The final assumption of the Reddit user was that the map rotation within Modern Warfare is balanced. Although he does not understand how it works behind the scenes, he does feel confident that fans should not see repeat maps outside of games in progress.
This data only keeps in mind map selection within the Search and Destroy game mode. Players might find different information when queuing within Team Deathmatch, Domination, or any other mode in Modern Warfare. Even so, at least fans can rest assured that in Search and Destroy maps are being evenly distributed in a random enough fashion to avoid repeats.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One.
