New Oculus VR Headset May Have Leaked | Game Rant
The Oculus Quest took the VR world by storm when it launched, offering one of the first opportunities for truly wireless, full-fledged virtual reality gaming experiences. While the original Oculus Quest launched just over a year ago, rumors have suggested that Facebook may already be working on a new model of the device, and now new images have leaked that could confirm this information.
While the Oculus Go has been discontinued recently, the Oculus Quest has gained a number of major updates since its launch. In addition to smaller experimental updates like controller-free hand tracking, the Quest was updated to include the ability to plug it into a PC to use as a PC VR gaming headset.
The latest leak comes courtesy of Twitter's WalkingCat, who has a history of leaking legitimate tech news ahead of their official reveals. While readers should still take this information with a grain of salt, as it's unverified by Facebook or Oculus, the images look promising. The Quest has been given a slick new look, shifting from an all-black look to a primarily white one, complete with white Touch controllers. The Quest's headstrap appears to have been revised, potentially easing problems some users have had tightening the straps correctly on the original Quest.
Oddly enough, the Quest's interpupillary distance (IPD) slider appears to be absent. This allows players to adjust the position of the lenses in the current Quest, making for a more comfortable viewing experience regardless of the spacing between the user's eyes. While the Oculus Rift S opted out of physically adjusting the lenses for a software adjustment instead, it wasn't always a perfect fit for users depending on the spacing between their eyes. It seems unlikely that the Quest would reverse course entirely on this feature, so it may be that the slider has simply been moved, or wasn't visualized in this render for some reason.
Finally, the leaked Quest render looks as though it's slightly less bulky, which may provide for a more comfortable experience than the current Quest. Some users have reported difficulties with the front-heavy Quest when compared to tethered virtual reality headsets, though up until this point it's been a necessity in order to cram enough tech into the headset to be usable as a standalone device. Of course, it still has a long way to go until it becomes as impressive as Facebook's next-gen VR headset sunglasses-style concept.
For now, virtual reality fans will have to wait and see if this leak turns out to be legitimate. With any luck, whenever Oculus' next wireless headset is released, it won't as difficult to acquire as the current Oculus Quest has been recently.
The original Oculus Quest VR headset is available now.
