Twitch Reverses Jinnytty Ban After Controversial Last of Us 2 Comments
Twitch has reconsidered the ban of Jinnytty after their controversial comments about a Last of Us 2 character.
Twitch has undergone serious in house maintenance to change the platform's appearance to the public eye. The platform has been handing out suspension and bans to streamers who violate its policies at a higher frequency lately, such as the ban on Dr. Disrespect.
Most recently, a streamer by the name of "Jinnytty" received a two-week suspension on July 24th after making comments towards one of the characters, Abby, in the popular videogame Last of Us 2. Jinnytty, after a couple of hours of streaming, made a comment about the character and mistakenly called her transgender, which most fans know isn't the case with Abby.
Abby has a more muscular build, and due to this, Jinntty thought it was okay to use that word to describe the character after hearing so many other people talk about it. However, Jinnytty also used it in an aggressive manner after being annoyed with Abby's character portrayal and disappointment towards the Last of Us 2's story.
After submitting an appeal, Jinnytty was able to reverse the suspension after just around seven and a half hours since it was enforced. In a public comment, Jinnytty apologized for accidentally expressing hate towards the transgender community, and she promises to be more educated and careful moving forwards about what she says on her streams.
The comment, in retrospect, does not seem to have any ill intent, more of a poor way to lash out her anger. Even Jinnytty admits that, when explaining why she made the hurtful comment, she was just not interested in the character's story, but she phrased it in the worst way possible. Twitch has not given any public comment so far as to what the deciding factor was to remove the ban.
Twitch has mentioned that it takes context into consideration when issuing bans, so it is possible that it reconsidered the intent of the word. Whatever the reason may be, this all goes to show that it is crucial to think before speaking, especially in the digital age.
