Xbox Boss Compares Console Scalability to PC | Game Rant
With Xbox going into the next generation of consoles as the runner-up to Sony, it's facing a lot of often unnecessary questioning. One such example being criticism of Microsoft's choice to continue supporting the Xbox One generation after the Xbox Series X launches through scaling graphics. Xbox boss Phil Spencer, ever communicative, recently addressed this specific topic.
Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Spencer dismisses this criticism entirely. In response to whether Xbox's studios will be "held back" because games will scale across game generations, Spencer says " 'held back' is a meme that gets created by people who are too caught up in device competition."
Nevertheless, Spencer decides to respond further to the assertion. He asks gamers to instead consider the PC platform, stating that "the diversity of hardware choice in PC has not held back the highest-fidelity PC games on the market." In other words, developers are able to make the most of top tier hardware on PC while also providing scalability for less powerful hardware.
As apt as Spencer's point is, his next is even stronger. "So this idea that developers don't know how to build games, or game engines, or ecosystems, that work across a set of hardware... there's a proof of point in PC that shows that's not the case." And that confidence is what gives Spencer's point of view its grounding. Spencer trusts in developers, while those saying developers will be "held back" seem to hold developers in low regard.
