10 Action Games With Lengthy Stories (& How Long They Take To Beat)

Action games typically don't rely on well thought out stories, that's why every Call Of Duty game is mostly about the multiplayer. The campaign is short and sweet and sometimes pretty shallow. But there are only so many Micheal Bay level explosive set-pieces one can have in a game.

So when a game that has action as a big part has a decent and long story, it's a surprise. The games on this list are specifically for those long single-player sessions, where players can get lost in interesting worlds alone. And all without the worry that it's about to end too soon.

10 Control- 11 1/2 Hours

This weird mind-bending game has a ton of action and set pieces that make it still worthy to be on the list. Even though it's not basing itself as an action game, it's those gunfights that bring the life out in the game. The story itself is very strange but it's not containing itself to under 10 hours.

Thankfully since it requires more time to unpack such a complex story, developers Remedy manage to tell everything in a decent amount of time. Being a linear game like most on the list, it still offers that freedom, by backtracking.

9 Rise of the Tomb Raider- 13 1/2 Hours

One of the most iconic characters in media got a reboot back in 2012. But it wasn't until 2016's Rise of the Tomb Raider did the series finally take off. This game holds so many hours of fun, from the platforming to puzzles and the combat it has everything.

Linear games aren't this well put together and don't try to bring back the player. But since the story is so engaging and decently long from what type of game it is, it needs to be on this list. An added bonus is that this still is one of the best Tomb Raider games we've seen.

8 Uncharted 4: A Thief's End-15 Hours

One of the best game series to own on a Sony console has ended on a high note on the PS4. The last adventure of main character, Nathan Drake, is also the longest. Working with the old crew of Sully and Elena, he now has the aid of his older brother Sam Drake.

Being his last outing, it would make sense for gamer makers Naughty Dog to go all out-- and they do. Even though it's a much longer it still keeps itself grounded by having a story that ties it all together. Since it's longer, the story is much deeper than the other ones in the series.

7 Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order- 16 1/2 Hours

Being probably the best Star Wars game in years it's a wonder how the story could hold up. Set after episode 3 players step into the boots Cal Kestiss, a Jedi Padwan as he and his crew try to save the Jedi Order. Having a good story, which may be better than some of the movies helps its case.

But what wins people over is the fact that it's long--for a linear Star Wars game. On top of its length,  the game has some of the best levels of 2019.

6 Watch Dogs 2- 19 Hours

When the first one dropped it was plagued by controversy, but thankfully the second one is in a better position. Adding more things, better hacks, and just building upon the first game, the sequel is a step above. Much like most open-world games, players will get distracted.

But in this case, the story is good enough to keep players going through it. While it clocks in around the same time as the first game, it builds upon it. Plus being a long open-world game, gives something the players can look forward to.

5 God Of War-20 1/2 Hours

Not to be confused about the other games in the series, the 2018 reboot is considered the longest in the series. The series moves away from the Greek world and now places itself neatly in Viking mythology. Being a fairly leaner game it still offers an above-average length in terms of story.

The story needs to be long for games like this, where Kratos and his son travel through many settings. It's a good thing that it's long so because players can really understand the relationship between father and son. Adding to the length, the use of it's "Game Plus" mode makes replayability even more fun.

4 Ghost Of Tsushima-21 Hours

Now the 21-hour mark can be stretched to 51 hours because it's an open-world game. And that can distract many players from doing the main story with all those side things to do. Fortunately, the game is long even without doing the side stuff.

Becoming the Ghost and the hero of Tsushima can all be done without having to worry about the length. Even removing the fast travel as an option and just traveling through the lush scenery makes it all worth it at the end.

3 Horizon Zero Dawn-22 1/2 Hours

The game offers so much in terms of story and things to do. Being a very long open world with action as the center of it, it's hard to reign in the story and the players. But Horizon Zero Dawn does it well.

To accompany the wide-open world the game has to offer, it has an ever-changing combat system to aid the player in taking down these cyber dinosaurs.  But it's the fact that players can still understand the story even when doing all the side things to level and make Alloy better and stronger.

2 The Last Of Us Part 2- 23 Hours

This controversial sequel has players either hating it or loving it. But one thing that everyone can agree on is that it's much longer and much deeper. The first game was only 14 hours long but still was able to convey its story without rushing the end.

For the second installment, Naughty Dog took liberties in the length by taking 9 more hours. With more time there's more of a story to tell and more things to do. The best thing about this game is unlike most action-adventure games is that it makes the player want to keep playing. Luckily this has enough content to do so.

1 Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice- 28 Hours

This is an all-around difficult game on the same level as Dark Souls and Bloodbourne. Not only are people playing for it being pretty hard, but also the story and it's so addictive. Clocking in at just under 30 hours this game gives the player tons of things to do in terms of action.

The extremely difficult boss fights are probably why it's one of the hardest games to beat from last year. While it does have open-world parts, it's not like Assassins Creedit emphasizes the linearity of it. And that's why it's interesting when it's not open-world but just as long.
