A Twitch Streamer is Playing Fall Guys With Jelly Beans
Mediatonic's Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is notable for its unique premise, blending the battle royale genre with obstacle course game show elements, as well as its user-focused social media presence. Before the game officially releases on August 4, Fall Guys announced a last-minute beta test being held this weekend, and one player has gone the extra mile of using literal jelly beans as a controller while streaming the game.
Rudeism, a 29-year-old game designer and Twitch streamer from New Zealand who advertises himself as being able to "turn anything into a controller," talked about Fall Guys on Twitter July 26 and asked what he should build to play the game. The official Fall Guys Twitter account dared him to use jelly beans, in reference to its characters that can wear outfits like a Half-Life headcrab pre-order bonus on Steam, and after showing off his creation yesterday Rudeism took to using it for six hours this afternoon.
In a clip of the "mad lad" taken by the Fall Guys Twitter account to advertise his stream, Rudeism explains that each of the 11 jelly beans are wired to a circuit board and send off signals when he touches them so he can move, change the camera angle, jump, dive, and grab things. As of this writing, he is planning to go back to Fall Guys later today to try and secure a victory.
The Fall Guys social media has been very active since its release date was announced last month, both spreading memes and dropping beta codes for interested players to grab. During a recent Reddit AMA, Mediatonic employees also said they want Fall Guys to recreate Rocket League's success by releasing for free through PlayStation Plus this month.
It's hard not to be interested in capturing Rocket League's success, as the multiplayer title rose to prominence thanks to a mix of great gameplay and accessibility. In fact, the racing soccer game will likely be even more popular going forward, as developer Psyonix announced Rocket League will become free to play this year.
That being said, as much as the PS Plus deal will undoubtedly help Fall Guys reach a larger audience, it may not need a huge push to become the next big thing in gaming circles. During its first beta test, Fall Guys became the most-viewed game on Twitch, and that passionate audience has clearly not faded away if Rudeism is any indication.
