Apex Legends Devs Respond to Strange Complaints about Female Legends
Apex Legends now has the game's Season 6 underway, meaning that another new Legend is available in the game. Rampart, a heavy weapons expert, has already been packing a punch in-game, but some fans are upset by the recent influx of female characters in the Battle Royale game.
Season 5 introduced the game to Loba, the High Society Thief, and according to unconfirmed Season 7 leaks, it appears that the next hero who will be added is also going to be female. Though Apex Legends is a game with a wide variety of characters across the gender spectrum, the frequency of female additions seems to have upset some fans, who took to Twitter to convey their frustrations.
These players posted comments calling the game feminist for constantly bringing in new female characters. Many other players hit back against these notations, saying that the wide variety of characters that Respawn Entertainment created doesn't show a bias for one particular group of people, but rather that the company included them all.
After this began, a few different Apex Legends devs jumped on Twitter to combat these sentiments as well. Design director Jason McCord mentioned that some members of the development team briefly talked about the new female characters along these lines before going ahead with them.
While Respawn Entertainment recognized that some fans may get upset by the three female Legends being introduced in quick succession, McCord said that the development team just acknowledged that they may get backlash for this decision and continued to do their job in creating these characters.
Apex Legends writer Tom Casiello also had something to say about the bizarre critics of the characters. Casiello told fans upset by the recent characters' gender that they may want to find "an alternate hobby" since the time keeping track of how many characters of which gender are released when could be spent for more impactful and positive activities. While a few fans seemed hung up on these Legends' genders, it seems the majority of fans aren't bothered by the female characters Respawn Entertainment and just enjoy playing the game.
It's impossible to please everyone, especially in game development, but Respawn Entertainment seems to stand behind its inclusion of characters with various characteristics. The new characters are adding new depth to the meta of Apex Legends, and this is satisfying to most of its player base, despite various bugs new Legends may bring with them.
Apex Legends is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version in development.
