Aquaman Director Discusses The Making of The Film and Its Sequel
The first half of DC's FanDome virtual convention is alive and kicking, and with it comes news about all sorts of DC properties and films that are in the works. Aquaman, as one of DC's more successful films in their cinematic universe, got its own panel as well, where the director talked about the making of the original film, and his long history working with Patrick Wilson on other projects such as The Conjuring.
While it has been known for some time that an Aquaman sequel was in the works, it has been left vague where it fits into the current timeline of DC's other movie projects, and just what kind of impact it will have on the broader universe. During the panel, director James Wan and actor Patrick Wilson discussed what it was like to work on the set of the original Aquaman, and the techniques they used to create an underwater film, including strapping actors into large mechanical see-saw devices meant to simulate floating.
There wasn't much unexpected news for Aquaman fans who were still unsure of the franchise's future however. Ever since the many struggles getting the DC Cinematic universe, particularly the troubled development and launch of Justice League, it has remained unclear what the plans were for the future, and which of the many actors or films would remain as part of the canon. Now, however, it seems that Jason Mamoa's Aquaman sequel is still moving forward steadily and will be delving even further into the world of Atlantis.
While many of the biggest mainline films in the DC Cinematic Universe struggled to live up to the hype, DC has found surprising success with smaller names. Even as Justice League and Batman v Superman released to critical and commercial disappointment, films like Joker, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman proved to be incredibly successful. Aquaman in particular made a huge splash in China, raking in over $1.1 billion worldwide, and showing that the king of the ocean has mass-market appeal after all. Hopefully that trend will continue with the upcoming Aquaman 2 and audiences will be treated to yet another underwater spectacle worth seeing in theaters.
Aquaman 2 is planned to hit theaters on December 16, 2022.
