Call of Duty Player Has Smart Idea for Downloading Large Updates
As Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone continue to add new content, the games have become infamous for their huge file sizes. In April there were conversations about Modern Warfare's file size getting out of control once it began to reach 200GB, but one fan has thought up a way to accommodate these update downloads more reasonably now that Season 5 is coming.
A Reddit user named Mokoo101 suggests Activision and Infinity Ward give "Premium Users," those who paid for Modern Warfare, priority access to preloading any new patches. According to their post on the r/modernwarfare subreddit today, this would lighten the load on Activision's servers, as those who paid for Modern Warfare and those who only use the free-to-play battle royale Warzone would "split the load in half" whenever a new update releases.
Slow Modern Warfare download speeds have affected PC users and console players, to the extent that some resort to using a virtual private network (VPN) to connect with alternate servers. One comment from Reddit user luveth on Mokoo101's post also suggests the idea of splitting downloads between "Premium" and free-to-play users could benefit Activision's bottom line by encouraging more people to buy the full game.
However, as sensible as this sounds, some commenters point out flaws with the plan. For example, luveth suggests a preloading option would result in more leaks — though they feel this minor issue is outweighed by better download speeds. Others point out there are users who spend a lot of money on microtransactions like Modern Warfare and Warzone's Call of Duty store bundles that would be left out of the deal.
Though this fan's idea is not necessarily perfect when considering every detail, it does feel like a step in the right direction for a problem that has continually plagued Call of Duty. Huge individual update downloads are so prevalent that Infinity Ward has tried to shrink Modern Warfare file size requirements starting in Season 4.
Despite concerns regarding download speeds, Activision and Infinity Ward will continue to update their popular first-person shooters with more content for players to enjoy. Call of Duty: Warzone Season 5 will bring new weapons and a faction to the game on August 5, and there will no doubt be more to follow even though Call of Duty 2020 could be announced at any time.
