Eiyuden Chronicle Kickstarter Closes as Third-Largest Campaign Yet
The Kickstarter campaign for the Suikoden-inspired JRPG Eiyuden Chronicle is now ever. After a month-long funding initiative, Eiyuden Chronicle brought in an incredibly impressive ¥481,621,841, or around $4.57 million. Not only does that amount smash Eiyuden Chronicle's initial goal of around $500,000, but it does something much more impressive — it makes Eiyuden Chronicle the third-largest video game Kickstarter project ever run.
At just over four and a half million dollars in funding, Eiyuden Chronicle significantly outraised Kickstarter's fourth-largest campaign in Torment: Tides of Numenara. Torment raised an impressive $4.2 million in 2013. That said, Eiyuden Chronicle still came quite short of catching Kickstarter's first and second-largest game campaigns. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night raised $5.5 million in 2015, which itself was well short of Shenmue 3's $6.3 million in 2015. Regardless, Eiyuden Chronicle has a lot to be proud of.
Eiyuden Chronicle demolished its goal by so much that backers unlocked an astonishing 44 unique stretch goals along the way. These included localizations for several languages including Chinese and Brazilian, minigames like cooking and monster raising, a fully orchestrated soundtrack, voiceover in the game's cutscenes, and a total of 10 new characters. That brings Eiyuden Chronicle, whose subtitle is Hundred Heroes, up to a total of 110 different playable in-game characters. Rabbit & Bear Studios has its work cut out for itself.
The end of the Kickstarter campaign is just the start of the project, of course. Now it's time for development to rise to the occasion. Rabbit & Bear Studios listed a tentative release window of October 2022 for Eiyden Chronicle, so there will be at least two years between now and when players can finally play the game for themselves. That's not too long when you consider fans of the Suikoden franchise have been waiting since 2006 for a proper sequel to the main series. If Konami won't deliver, Rabbit & Bear will.
Eiyden Chronicle releases October 22 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
