Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Won't Have Microtransactions
Sucker Punch Productions' Ghost of Tsushima has been a huge success for the studio and Sony, becoming the PlayStation 4's fastest-selling first-party debut for a new intellectual property. Today, a co-op mode called Ghost of Tsushima: Legends that will let two-to-four players team up against supernatural entities inspired by Japanese mythology was announced for fall 2020, and that free new content will reportedly not include any microtransactions.
A PlayStation representative confirmed to IGN on behalf of Sucker Punch that all content in Ghost of Tsushima: Legends will be unlocked through regular gameplay, and there are "absolutely no plans" to add microtransactions. This restraint is surprising given PlayStation earns 41 percent of its revenue through add-on content such as DLC and microtransactions, according to its recent quarterly financial report, but it is good to see the publisher not try to shoehorn purchases into games as a result.
That said, the open-world action title has proven to be lucrative even without additional in-game content. Ghost of Tsushima was the best-selling game of July 2020, beating out Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Paper Mario: The Origami King while becoming the fifth best-selling game of the year so far, according to statistics reported by the NPD Group.
Sucker Punch has already updated Ghost of Tsushima with free new content, such as additional difficulty modes and accessibility options, so the promise of a free multiplayer mode being added later this year shows there is a lot of potential for the samurai epic to linger in people's minds for some time. That's not to say anything about how much attention the game has received on social media for its non-combative pleasures, like taking photos across beautiful Japanese landscapes.
According to PlayStation, over 15.5 million photos were taken in the game during its first 10 days alone, and in that same period of time Ghost of Tsushima players pet over eight million foxes. As one of the last PS4-exclusive titles before Sony's PlayStation 5 is released, Sucker Punch's newest adventure has certainly made a name for itself.
However, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends will be overtly about combat, with players taking on the guise of mythological warriors to defeat enemies from folk tales. With the base game being built around a single-player experience, and a somewhat solitary one at that, it will be interesting to see how Sucker Punch handles Ghost of Tsushima's free multiplayer mode as more information becomes available.
Ghost of Tsushima is available now on PlayStation 4.
