Marvel's Avengers PS4 Box Art Has Spider-Man Sticker | Game Rant
Crystal Dynamics announced earlier this month that Marvel's Avengers would feature Spider-Man as a playable character. The only catch was that the web-swinger would be exclusive to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 — not as a timed exclusive either, but as PlayStation-only content that lasts for the length of Marvel's Avengers' lifespan.
Following the Spider-Man exclusivity announcement, Crystal Dynamics has gone ahead and updated the Marvel's Avengers box art. Well, it's updated it for the PlayStation anyway. Now the box art features a Spider-Man badge that promotes the beloved wallcrawler as a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 exclusive.
The Marvel's Avengers' cover seems to have updated over on Amazon.com first. ResetEra user Lant_War then brought the new image to the internet's attention when they uploaded it to the gaming forum site. The sticker itself likely isn't apart of the actual box art. If anything, it's just something found on the physical game's plastic wrapping.
Regardless, it's not strange to see Spider-Man advertisements on Marvel's Avengers' PlayStation version. Sony paid to make Spider-Man an exclusive for the sole purpose of drawing more attention to the PlayStation brand. It wouldn't make any sense at this point for the company not to flaunt their advantage over the other platforms that Marvel's Avengers will appear on.
Still, adding the sticker — especially when Spider-Man doesn't come out until next year — certainly constitutes rubbing salt in the wound. A lot of individuals interested in Marvel's Avengers' aren't happy about Spider-Man's exclusivity with PlayStation. It doesn't help that the console will be getting other exclusive content as well, everything from skins to missions to just general access.
On top of this, Spider-Man will be the only Marvel's Avengers character exclusive to one platform, meaning Xbox and PC players won't be getting anything to counter him. Crystal Dynamics stated it made Spider-Man exclusive to PlayStation to honor the relationship the character had with Sony. It's likely Xbox and PC aren't getting anything because the systems don't have the same relationship with other Marvel characters. It isn't very sensible, but that's the only reason available.
To make matters worse, Spider-Man will expand the Marvel's Avengers story, so he won't just be some cosmetic character with no real weight behind him. He'll work something similar to Marvel's Avengers' Hawkeye, who will have his own set of story missions when he releases. Crystal Dynamics has said that this won't change the overall story, though. PlayStation fans will just get to see things from Spider-Man's perspective.
Marvel's Avengers will release on September 4 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One
