Monster Hunter World Has Sold an Incredible Number of Copies
Multiple video game developers and publishers including Take-Two Interactive and Electronic Arts have released their financial reports for the first quarter of fiscal year 2021, running from April to June 2020. Among them are Capcom, which had its biggest first quarter ever amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and a big facet of that success was continually high sales numbers for Monster Hunter World.
Monster Hunter World has sold over 16 million cumulative units since launch, and the game's Iceborne expansion has sold 5.8 million units according to the financial report published today. That means the expansion alone has sold almost a million additional copies since March 13, 2020, when a press release from Capcom's Investor Relations announced Monster Hunter World: Iceborne passed five million units sold worldwide.
Since that Investor Relations press release came out, overall sales for the Monster Hunter series, which started in 2004, have risen from 62 to 64 million units — more than the Mega Man and Devil May Cry series combined based on comparisons published in the first quarter 2021 report. Monster Hunter has also sold more than the entire Street Fighter franchise, currently at 45 million units. The only Capcom property listed with higher lifetime sales is Resident Evil at 103 million units — though Resident Evil 3 Remake sold significantly less than Resident Evil 2 Remake.
The success of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, which contributed to the company earning ¥23,722 million in net sales this first quarter, has not gone unnoticed. Capcom's ongoing action role-playing game has received new title updates since it released, most recently adding in the Elder Dragon Alatreon, and events like this summer's Monster Hunter World Sizzling Spice Fest are still being introduced.
Though Monster Hunter World continues to receive updates, the game is noticeably not available on the Nintendo Switch. The last Monster Hunter game to be published on Nintendo's hardware was Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate in 2018, though the company confirmed its intention to make a new game in the series for a younger audience on Switch during its shareholders' meeting this June.
Capcom has also announced plans to expand the Monster Hunter brand outside of its popular video games. A movie based on the franchise is in development that stars Milla Jovovich — who also played Alice in the Resident Evil movie franchise that ran from 2002 to 2017. However, the Monster Hunter movie was delayed to April 2021 due to complications from the ongoing pandemic.
Monster Hunter World is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
