One The Last of Us 2 Character Changed Races From the First Game

The Last of Us 2 has been subjected to many different controversies, even though it has only been publicly available since June. Despite the short time since its release, those who don't like the game have already review bombed the game on Metacritic and sent death threats to Laura Bailey, a voice actress for one of the game's significant characters. However, one fan discovered that a character had been change from the original pretty drastically. Warning: this article contains spoilers for The Last of Us 2.

Many fans of the first game have expressed their dislike of Abby in The Last of Us 2. Abby's murder of Joel as well as her muscular body type seems to have angered many gamers. However, she isn't the complete focus of this controversy. Despite this, she is still related to the subject — specifically, her father who was the surgeon going to operate on Ellie in an attempt to discover a cure.

One Reddit user by the screenname Ravensight_q8 posted pictures from the first game. In that game, Abby's father Dr. Jerry Anderson looked very different than the version of him in The Last of Us 2. While the second game shows him to be young and pale man, the original game gave him a distinctive look that doesn't match up. The user's post showed Joel in the moment of stabbing the surgeon as he attempts to free Ellie. This version of Abby's father is gaunt, and while he wasn't as easily made out due to his hospital scrubs and mask, but his face is significantly darker.

While this isn't official, the wiki page originally listed Dr. Anderson as "African American" based on his appearance in the first game, confirming that the majority of fans believed this to be the case. If this same character had his appearances from the first and second games put next to each other, he would not even look related to himself, much less seem to be the same person.

Other fans speculated on why this change was made. Some stated that Naughty Dog may have assumed it would be too controversial to introduce a Black antagonist who opens the game by attacking someone with her gang, saying that Joel's murder leaking along with these details might have been enough to cancel the game, though in reality that's highly unlikely.

Whatever the reason, it is certainly an interesting detail to note. While there are many details that Naughty Dog carried over from the first game to The Last of Us 2, it seems there are some aspects that the developer may have overlooked.

The Last of Us Part 2 is out now, exclusively for PlayStation 4.
