Pokemon Sword and Shield Offering Free Mystery Gift This Weekend
Breeding and competitive battling is one of the most expansive activities that Pokemon players can take part in, but it may be an intimidating process for newcomers in spite of systems implemented in Pokemon Sword and Shield. For those interested in breaking into Sword and Shield's competitive battling, The Pokemon Company is offering a free "battle-ready" monster through Mystery Gift this weekend for anyone who watches the Players Cup Finals.
This online battling tournament has been going on throughout the summer, and yesterday The Pokemon Company announced that anyone who views matches airing at 11:00 a.m. PDT on August 22 and 23 can receive Mystery Gift passcodes that offer a Porygon2 trained to make use of Trick Room strategies. This code will only work through August 31, so those who are interested in the VGC should jump at the chance to receive an infamously effective Pokemon with speed-altering shenanigans that can take advantage of the Eviolite item for defensive buffs.
Other battle-trained monsters have been offered to viewers throughout the Players Cup. Pokemon fans were able to receive a free shiny Amoonguss in Sword and Shield via a Korean Mystery Gift code earlier this month, one that had moves modeled after a Pokemon used during the competition.
Interestingly, Sword and Shield are not the only Pokemon games prominently featuring the Normal-type evolutionary line which spans from Generation 1 to Generation 4. Niantic's AR mobile game Pokemon GO may have Porygon as a Community Day spotlight for September or October, as fans took to social media with a lot of love for the digitally-interfacing Pokemon compared to its competition.
Porygon has also been showcased in DeNA's mobile game Pokemon Masters, which introduced the "Poryphone" smart device that allows trainer to activate their signature sync moves, a powerful attack that raises the stats of a player's entire team. Pokemon Masters recently announced it will change its name, host a few special events, and introduce a new game mode to celebrate its first anniversary.
The latest Pokemon games on Nintendo Switch have been the first to feature DLC, with The Crown Tundra slated to release later this year. However, Sword and Shield have also kept players coming back through Wild Area events and periodic Mystery Gifts. Many of those Mystery Gift codes have given players free items, so it's cool to see The Pokemon Company go a step further and potentially kindle fans' interests in the competitive scene.
Pokemon Sword and Shield are available now on Nintendo Switch.
