Sony Pursuing More Third Party Exclusives for PS5 | Game Rant
Chances are most gamers on the internet have heard at least something of the uproar surrounding Marvel’s Avengers and its PlayStation-exclusive content. This is something that has left a lot of people conflicted - even PlayStation owners who stand to benefit from it - but if word around the industry this week is any indication, this could be just the first of several more third-party exclusivity deals that Sony is striking for the PlayStation 5.
On Thursday, Imran Khan of Kinda Funny Games let slip in a video that Sony has been busy behind the scenes securing timed-exclusivity deals for a number of upcoming PS5 games, all in order to press the “PlayStation Advantage” it has begun marketing with Marvel’s Avengers. What these games are or how many of them there are, he wouldn’t say, but he teased that the scope of these deals is insane and includes “games that are widely accepted as multiplatform.”
“There are things you will be shocked to find out that Sony is moneyhatting, like they are locking up for timed exclusivity. Like, ‘wow, that is a game that you’re choosing?’ Not because it’s bad, but because it’s huge,” he said, adding that he wouldn't be shocked if Sony ended up with at least another deal on par with Marvel's Avengers and its mix of timed and fully exclusive content.
Khan provided some further clarity later on. Following his claims in the video, an industry insider who goes simply by Matt online echoed Khan’s initial claims on ResetEra, stating, “Yeah, there is a lot of it coming and the scale will be shocking.” To which Khan responded with, “There isn't a major third party out there Sony failed to approach asking what kind of deals they could work out. Some had content, some had games, some had content and games.”
It wouldn’t be all that shocking if this turns out to be legit. Marvel’s Avengers aside, Sony has already struck a fair number of exclusivity deals of some sort or other for the PS5. Highly-anticipated third-party titles like Godfall, Bugsnax, and Ghostwire: Tokyo have been confirmed to be either console or timed exclusives for the PS5, while unannounced games like Final Fantasy 16 are rumored to be timed PS5 exclusives as well.
Given that this all still hearsay, it’s still too soon to tell how much of this could be true or gauge whether consumers will be on board with the notion of more PS5 exclusivity deals, though the backlash to Marvel’s Avengers suggests that gamers won’t be too welcoming to at least a few of these.
The PlayStation 5 launches this holiday season.
