Steam Servers Are Currently Down | Game Rant

UPDATE: It appears that Steam's servers are slowly coming back online. Original story follows:

Steam is currently experiencing a widespread server outage, which seems to be impacting multiple aspects of the popular storefront application. The outage follows Steam users having trouble accessing certain games yesterday, including Red Dead Redemption 2 and a number of Bethesda games, like Skyrim.

Trying to access the store page will result in a black screen, as will the Community tab. User profiles appear to be working to a limited degree, showing certain information like profile comments, groups, but no showcased information, like recently played games or badges earned. However, it appears that user libraries are functioning normally. Users are still able to launch and play games, though they will see a prompt warning that cloud saves are disabled. Additionally, it appears matchmaking services are being impacted as well, so players will be stuck with single-player games.

It isn't immediately clear what's causing the issue. There have been no updates on Steam's official support Twitter account, nor the standard account. Because of that, it isn't clear when the service is estimated to come back online. Valve has been making some adjustments to the platform lately, though they haven't related to servers, at least that's been announced.

Server outages are nothing new to online services. Just weeks ago, Xbox Live suffered a major outage, and PlayStation once had a notoriously long outage lasting about a month. However, Steam outages are exceptionally rare, especially to this degree. That the company hasn't said anything indicates it may not yet be aware of the issue, though it's unlikely things will stay that way for long.

Server outages tend to be one of the most frustrating issues for gamers, so it's likely an issue Valve will want to solve quickly. Upon Fall Guys' release, users review bombed the game for its server issues, which can dramatically affect how well a game performs. Of course, all the time Steam spends offline is lost money for the company, so the service will likely be back in no time, considering just how big Valve is.

In the meantime, there are plenty of other ways to play games on PC, so fans should have little to worry about. Not being able to access matchmaking is unfortunate, but there isn't much that can really be done about it, at least that players are able to control, so fans will simply need to wait it out until the service comes back online.
