Watch Dogs Legion Players Might Have a Hard Time Making Army of Spy Grandmas
Ubisoft's Watch Dogs: Legion has been marketed on its "play as anyone" mechanic, which Creative Director Clint Hocking said is an evolution of the first game's focus on learning about passersby during an AMA on the r/watch_dogs subreddit today. Hocking also said building your own army is an evolution of the vigilante team in Watch_Dogs 2, but he warns players not to expect an easy assembly process for crazy ideas.
Different classes with unique skills can be recruited to the player's resistance group DedSec throughout London, such as Watch Dogs: Legion's construction workers who can access heavy-duty weapons from construction sites. However, Hocking fielded a lot of questions about grandma characters in particular. For instance, he told Reddit user ignas04 that it is possible to find an MI6 spy grandma, but the combination is so rare that he has never seen one.
He says the odds of finding multiple MI6 grandmas would be "one in a billion" if players hope to create an army with this character type, and also tells YouTuber Treviso that it's "improbable" to find a grandma with the Gunkata skill that allows for instant takedowns when wielding a gun. All of these things are possible with Watch Dogs: Legion's random generation, however, and the developer encourages players to share their rare finds online.
Hocking also outlines ways to make creating one's army easier. Permadeath is optional in Watch Dogs: Legion single player, and does not exist in multiplayer because there was "too much potential for griefing," so players can choose to "stick with the same characters throughout."
The AMA delves into many other parts of Watch Dogs: Legion's development, from the months-long process of recording dialogue for a diverse cast of British characters to working with Abbey Road Studios for the musical score, and Hocking also touches on work from home efforts that began in mid-March. Many developers including Jagex, the team behind RuneScape, have been working from home due to the coronavirus pandemic, leading to a host of game delays.
Though grandmas are a popular example of the upcoming game's widespread recruiting system, Hocking's AMA highlights the overall idea that Watch Dogs: Legion will offer randomization and customization options for the player. Ubisoft's Watch Dogs: Legion also has accessibility options meant to help as many people as possible take part in the experience.
Watch Dogs: Legion launches October 29, 2020 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions to follow.
