Xbox Series X Controller Packaging Leaks, Hints at Two Next-Gen Consoles
New images have come to light that might give players new insight on what to expect from Microsoft's plans going forward with Next-Gen consoles, and specifically the Xbox Series X. From the looks of this latest leak, some early assumptions for the Series X may turn out to be true, at least if the information on the controller packaging turns out to be true.
This newest leak comes from a prominent leaker, @Wario64 on Twitter, who shared a set of images uploaded by @TinyRakan, who claims to have an Xbox Series X controller, complete with the packaging. The Verge has also found similar information from a separate leaker, which certainly points to a number of possibilities, including a white Xbox Series X console or controller.
Seemingly related to another leak from late July, which Microsoft had a cryptic response to, the latest images seem to imply that not only will there possibly be a white Xbox Series X console, but a separate Next-Gen system entirely. On the packaging revealed in these new images, the details claim that the controller will be compatible with Mobile, Windows 10, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with that last one raising the most questions. Namely, the implication here is that Microsoft has an Xbox Series S console planned to release, possibly alongside the Series X.
This coincides with previous claims from Microsoft about the Series X's name, specifically that the new console is really just the Xbox and that the Series X is the product line that the system comes from. In fact, when the name was originally announced, it led many to speculate that there was in fact a larger series of consoles planned to release for next-gen, possibly with a light, or priced down, version planning to expand the possible audience at launch. Of course, none of this would be too far out of the question, as the current generation of consoles do have a standard and pro version of each console, and Nintendo even made a mobile only Switch Light, so the business model isn't new.
Whether or not the Series S is pointing to a lighter version of the new Xbox or a type of Series X-2 console, this leak could mean that players will have more options than previously expected for Microsoft's Next-Gen consoles. It should be stated, however, that this is yet to be confirmed by Microsoft at the moment, although other outlets like The Verve have received some sort of confirmation that these pictures may be legitimate. Still, as with any leaks of this nature, the new information should be taken with a grain of salt, and product development may still change in the future, even if this is the current plan.
Xbox Series X is set to launch Holiday 2020.
