Awesome Games Done Quick 2021 Will Be Online Due to COVID-19
Awesome Games Done Quick will be 10 years old this January. In spite of the lockdown due the pandemic, the charity organization intends to continue to raise money for Doctors Without Borders, but the event will look a little different from previous years.
Because of the novel coronavirus, Summer Games Done Quick 2020 was completely online. In spite of missing in-person revenue from the event, SGDQ 2020 still managed to raise $2.3 million for Doctors Without Borders, and they plan to do it all again in January. This will be the first Awesome Games Done Quick to be streamed entirely online.
Starting January 3rd, 2021 and going until January 10th, 2021, AGDQ will be streaming live on Twitch. The charity event once again decided to hold its Doctors Without Borders money raising event online to help prevent the spread of coronavirus to the community. Unlike Summer Games Done Quick 2020 which was delayed, AGDQ will be on time, with its normal January run time. It will run for a week, like usual, and will feature a variety of speedrunners from all over the world.
Submissions for AGDQ will start on September 24th, 2020 and the lineup of games will be announced on Halloween Day 2020. But for those impatient for new speedrunning content, GDQ also will be hosting an all-women, completely online speedrunning event called Fleet Fatales between November 15 and the 21. Hopefully in both events, viewers will get to see even more interesting runs, like the runner that defeated the final boss in Secret of Mana with his feet instead of his hands or that two-person, one-controller, blindfolded playthrough of Mike Tyson's Punch Out.
AGDQ 2020 raised a record-breaking $3.13 million USD in January of this year in the last live event before the coronavirus hit the US. While SGDQ 2020 didn't raise as much as AGDQ 2020, the completely-online event still brought in a massive amount of money. It's pretty amazing considering that the pandemic has hit many people around the world hard financially that so many were still able to donate. Hopefully, next year's online AGDQ will do just as well or better, bringing in tons of donations for a great cause.
While gamers won't be able to see the event live and in person, it's still good news that they can watch from the safety of their couches and donate if they choose. Come January, speed fans can look forward to more game-breaking glitches, fast puzzle solving, and new and amazing runs like the Half-Life: Alyx speedrun from SGDQ 2020.
