Frictional Games Releases Amnesia Series' Source Codes
Many gamers are aware of Amnesia, the horror franchise that became very popular on YouTube when the gaming video platform was first getting big. With the release date for Amnesia: Rebirth on the horizon, Frictional Games is also giving fans of the series another surprise as well.
With the 10 year anniversary of Amnesia, Frictional Games has been celebrating the horror game and its community, which greatly expanded after content creators such as Pewdiepie began uploading videos of their gameplay. However, some Amnesia fans go further than simply playing the games, as they also created mods that could be implemented in the horror setting. The game's developer is making it easier for those fans to create new content in the games.
Due to the large numbers of user content for Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the positive impacts that these mods have had on the game, Frictional Games has decided to release the full source code for that game as well as Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. With the full source code out in the open like this, fans will have a much easier time creating enjoyable add-ons. As long as fans stay within the guidelines of the GPL v3 license, they are free to use the source code to create whatever content that they would like.
Frictional Games also clarified that this doesn't mean that either of the games are free. Releasing the source codes publicly allows for free use of the content, but this doesn't mean that the game itself is suddenly free. The developer also said that it feels like the source code in full could have been released much earlier. However, with Amnesia's recent 10th anniversary and the release date for Amnesia: Rebirth right around the corner, Frictional Games felt that it "couldn't wait any longer" and that it was a good time to give the community access to the source code.
Frictional Games says that is excited to see what the Amnesia community does with these newly public codes. The developer also hopes that this will help fans learn about video game programming and allow them to potentially take steps to create their own games as well. While the features of the game are a decade old, they can still offer interesting insight for those who want to embark on their own game dev journey.
Amnesia: Rebirth will launch on October 20 for PC and PS4.
