PS4 Saves Might Not Transfer to PS5 for Some Upgraded Games
People who plan to purchase the PS5 and want to play their PS4 games on Sony's next-gen console may have a major disappointment coming if they own certain games. According to one source, a lot of saves that work on the PS4 won't work on the PS5, adding a new factor for players to consider when considering whether to buy a PS5 or an Xbox.
The PS5 is the newest console to be part of Sony's lineup, but according to The Washington Post, the Xbox Series X already has a major advantage over the PS5 that many players won't want to ignore: apparently a lot of PS4 saves won't be compatible with the PS5, while the Xbox Series X is reported to let players bring their save files over to the new console.
Some games, like Yakuza: Like a Dragon have confirmed PS4 saves won't transfer to the PS5, although fans haven't heard word from every dev yet. But according to the WP, many devs are reporting that they're in the same boat as Yakuza, in regards to PS4 games with a free PS5 upgrade. This doesn't apply to games that are playable through pure backward compatibility like Watch Dogs Legion and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
This is proving to be a major concern for people who plan to buy the highly anticipated Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which comes out on PS4 just a couple days before the PS5 launch date. This means that people who didn't participate in the PS5 pre-orders and might wait a few weeks to upgrade will then be faced with a difficult situation where they might have to restart their campaigns. Or, these players can just choose to play them on a new console with a new copy of the game, which means more money spent. Given how much detail goes into the open world of recent Assassin's Creed games, this would be majorly frustrating for players who've already sunk a lot of hours into their PS4 copies exploring the world.
One game is confirmed to be able to transfer save files: Spider-Man: Miles Morales PS4 saves will be playable on the PS5 so long as players take advantage of the game's free next-gen upgrade. Hopefully, other games and devs will come forward in the next few weeks and confirm whether their games will support cross-gen saves or not.
If a majority of PS4 games that are playable on PS5 end up not being able to transfer saves over, that may be a major strike in some people's books against the console. The information makes it look like Sony isn't enforcing a cross-save feature, so people should stay tuned to their favorite devs and companies to see what the status on their favorite games will be.
