The World Ends With You Anime Gets Extended Trailer | Game Rant
Square Enix has released a longer look at the The World Ends With You anime, to be titled The World Ends With You: The Animation. Although the new trailer suggests work on the anime is well under way, there is no official release date more specific than some time within 2021.
The World Ends With You: The Animation appears to be a direct adaptation of the game's plot. The 2008 DS game follows Neku Sakuraba, a teenager living in Tokyo's bustling Shibuya district. Neku discovers that he is in a limbo version of Tokyo called the Underground, and has entered a competition known as the Reaper's Game to earn another chance at life. Unfortunately, Neku doesn't remember the circumstances surrounding his participation in the game. His game partner, upbeat seamstress Shiki Misaki, doesn't know either.
The trailer corresponds to the beginning of the game, when Neku first wakes up in the Reaper's Game. As cars and people move through him, Neku realizes that something is very wrong. This is an extended version of a scene from The World Ends With You anime's first trailer, which released in July, although that first trailer also included small snippets from scenes that take place later in the game. Fans of the game will notice that the fluid animation contrasts sharply with the comic-book style the game used for many of its cutscenes. It also appears to use an original score in place of the game's soundtrack. It remains to be seen what elements of the game's aesthetic and music will remain in the anime.
Notably, the anime's depiction of this scene diverges from the game in a few key ways. The animation adds more details and camera angles to the scene. Plus, in the trailer, Neku sees two Player Pins in his hands. Although he also has two in the game, he only sees one Player Pin in his hand during the corresponding in-game cutscene. This suggests that anime will not adapt the game's cutscenes shot-for-shot, but will streamline segments when needed. Given that the game's narrative helped it become one of the best-reviewed DS games of all time, fans may be nervous about any alterations to the game's storytelling.
Many fans of The World Ends With You may be disappointed that the anime covers the game's events, instead of being a sequel. The last release associated with the franchise was a remake of the original for Nintendo Switch in 2018. This version included an exclusive epilogue that ended with a cliffhanger, leaving many fans anxious for news of a sequel. Given Square Enix's focus on promoting the anime, it seems unlikely that a sequel game is in development at the same time.
Still, the anime may point to exciting things to come for the franchise. For example, Kingdom Hearts 3's secret ending seems to show protagonist Sora arrive in the Tokyo from The World Ends With You. This raises the possibility that the new anime will tie into Kingdom Hearts lore in some way.
The World Ends With You: The Animation is set to premiere in 2021.
