Among Us Might Change Ghost Mechanics in Future Update
Becoming a Ghost in Among Us currently doesn't leave much for the player to do. If they're a Crewmate, they can complete any remaining tasks they might have, and if they're an Imposter, they can still sabotage for their partner-in-crime. But they can't participate in Emergency Meeting discussions, which is the most interactive part of the game.
Because of this, some players simply leave the lobby once they get killed. Among Us developer InnerSloth has interpreted these players' actions to mean that playing as a Ghost in the game is "boring," so they're working on an update that will fix that. While discussing Among Us on Twitch's Weekly Gaming Show, InnerSloth programmer Forest Willard stated that he and his team have thought about turning players that become Ghosts into some sort of guardian angels. That way, they have more to do after they die.
Exactly what it means to be a guardian angel wasn't touched on, but Innerslooth did state that whatever it was trying to do is challenging to pull off due to balancing issues. With that in mind, guardians likely can directly interfere with Imposters somehow, and it's easy to see how that can become problematic. The odds are already stacked against Imposters from the very beginning due to being outnumbered, so giving Crewmates more ways to beat them after death only makes the role harder.
Considering Among Us is a social deduction game, the "guardian angel" role Innersloth has in mind is likely the same as the "doctor" role found in games like Mafia and Werewolf. Those with the doctor role have the ability to save someone from being killed by the murderers once every round. Being a guardian angel could mean something similar, where Crewmate Ghosts have the ability to stop Imposters from killing someone once every meeting.
The idea alone sounds a little overpowered in Among Us, but Innersloth may already be close to figuring out how to balance it. Designer Marcus Bromander stated that while the team wants to make being a Ghost more fun for everyone, it especially wants to make it so for the player that dies first — because being in that position "sucks." If Innersloth relegates the guardian role like this, then there will only be one guardian angel at a time. From here, if players wanted to allow more Ghosts to become guardians, then they could use Among Us' incredibly user-friendly customization to do so.
Among Us is on PC and mobile.
