Baldur's Gate 3 Early Access Beaten in 7 Minutes | Game Rant
Larian Studios’ turn-based roleplaying title Baldur’s Gate 3 released in early access less than two weeks ago, and the game immediately received a generally positive response from players. The D&D-based adventure set in the Forgotten Realms has already gained the attention of speedrunners as well, one of whom has beaten the game in a time many players would have believed impossible.
The early access version of Baldur’s Gate 3 allows gamers to play through Act 1 of the game, which according to Larian Studios features approximately 25 hours of self-contained content. However, Twitch streamer Cary “Professor Palmer” Palmer, a self-proclaimed RPG speedrunner, has managed to get through the early access content in a mere seven minutes.
The speedrunner stated that completing Act 1 of the game’s early access version this quickly was no small feat. It required 200 attempts and lots of notetaking to perfect the strategy and route that would be used to accomplish it, and Palmer also made sure to point out that he came up with the final speedrun route with the help of two other players. The key to the speedrun was making use of the Transmutation spell “Jump,” which triples a selected character’s jumping distance. This allowed Palmer to leap through the game in 30-foot increments.
In addition to using the spell, which is only available to a few of Baldur’s Gate 3’s early access player classes, Palmer also bypassed all of the game’s combat, including a boss encounter that is usually required at the end of the prologue, zipped through cutscenes, ignored companions, and completed no quests. This means that while the early access level cap is currently 4, Palmer completed the speedrun still a fledgling level 1.
The turning point of a successful speedrun, stated Palmer, is the well in the game’s Blighted Village area, which leads to the underground location known as Whispering Depth. To enter the well, players must successfully roll an investigation check, so failing can essentially lead to a halted speedrun. Once in Whispering Depth, players can jump to the Underdark, which serves as the final area in Baldur’s Gate 3’s early access version.
Ultimately, completing Act 1 of the game so quickly is possible because many of the quests are essentially optional since not completing them does not hinder advancing in the main story. One downside of attempting multiple routes and eventually beating the game’s early access content so quickly, says Palmer, is that he realized that most of the content isn’t necessary. That doesn’t, however, mean players can’t thoroughly enjoy it anyway, and Palmer intends to alter his speedrun strategy as updated versions of Baldur’s Gate 3 are released.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is available on Mac, PC and Stadia.
