Devil May Cry 5 Next-Gen Performance Modes Revealed | Game Rant
One big surprise announcement at Sony's PlayStation 5 showcase event last month was Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, a PS5 launch title introducing Vergil as a playable character that will also include new difficulty modes and make use of next-gen console hardware advancements. Since that announcement there have been discussions about how the game improves over its current-gen version, and yesterday its range of performances was clarified.
In a Resetera thread started September 16 to discuss the game's announcement, Capcom Vice President of Digital Platforms and Marketing William Yagi-Bacon decided to clarify concerns "with respect to resolution and frame rate" on both the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Yagi-Bacon was able to confirm with producer and "DMC hype man" Matt Walker that Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition will support 4K and 60fps in certain conditions.
While fans can apparently expect previews and reviews "in the coming weeks" that will be able to share more, he breaks down what players can expect in different situation. These resolution and frame rate limits include:
- 4K/30fps with ray tracing on
- 1080p/60fps with ray tracing on
- 4K/60fps with ray tracing off
- Up to 120fps with ray tracing off
While not in this discussion specifically, the ray-tracing removed statistics will be pertinent to non-console users, as Capcom previously confirmed Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition will not support ray-tracing on PC. In an action-heavy game like DMC5, many players will likely gravitate to having higher frames-per-second at the cost of resolution, but it should be a relief to know it can run at targeted 4K and 60fps.
There will be other advantages to playing the game on next-generation consoles. For example, one recent video showcased how Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition has four-second load times on PS5.
Anyone who isn't looking to jump onto next-gen consoles right after launch does not have to miss out on all the new content being added. During Tokyo Game Show 2020, Walker and director Hideaki Itsuno announced Vergil will be available on PS4 and Xbox One via paid DLC.
While the game will be available to purchase digitally next month, fans who want a physical copy of the special edition will have to wait a little longer. Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition will release physically on December 1, though anyone looking to really take advantage of its performance capabilities may prefer to start their adventure earlier.
