Elgato Capture Cards Are Compatible With Xbox Series X and S

Elgato, the creator of one of the most popular lines of capture cards, addressed a surprisingly major issue that hasn't received much attention going into the launch of next-generation consoles. More and more console players are streaming their games from their consoles, and compatibility with capture cards like Elgato's is a big priority. Taking the initiative, Elgato's gone ahead and confirmed that its capture devices will all work with Xbox's next-generation consoles, at the least.

In a Reddit post to the Elgato subreddit, Technical Marketing Representative Phil Eggebrecht addressed concerns from the Xbox community. The priority message, written in bolded font, is that Elgato game capture devices will support Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S capture. Whether it's gameplay, dashboard footage, or anything else, Elgato devices will support next-gen Xbox from launch day on November 10 and forward.

The only small text worth noting is that Elgato explicitly states "all current capture devices." This likely implies that cards that are no longer supported, like the Elgato Game Capture HD, are not confirmed to be compatible with next-gen Xbox consoles. That doesn't necessarily mean they won't work, though, Elgato just can't confirm compatibility.

Eggebrecht goes on to break down Elgato's support for the Xbox Series X and X and their high definition resolutions, namely 4K and 1440p. The Elgato HD60S, for example, will be capped at 1080p and 60fps on both the Xbox Series X and S, which should be more than enough for most streamers or content creators. However, for those wanting support for 4K resolution and 60fps the Elgato 4K60 Pro MK.2 is confirmed to be compatible. However, while the Elgato 4K60 Pro MK.2 is supposed to support 1440p up to 120fps, it is not yet verified.

Additionally, Elgato sates streamer worries regarding the Xbox Series X and S consoles' support for HDMI 2.1. No, streamers do not need an HDMI 2.1 cable to stream. HDMI is backward compatible, so Elgato devices will work perfectly fine with the Xbox Series X and S despite their HDMI 2.1 compatibility.

For those planning to pick up a PlayStation 5, there's no need to worry yet. Elgato says at this time that it "cannot officially confirm compatibility," but that doesn't mean its devices won't be compatible. Elgato likely is either going through its testing processes right now or is involved in some sort of official certification process. Elgato will provide more information on PS5 compatibility with its capture devices as soon as the company is able, which will hopefully be soon.
