Far Cry 6's Secret Weapon for Success May Have Flown Under the Radar
Among all of the other facets of each game, villains are typically the centerpieces of Far Cry games, at least in their current framework. Far Cry 3 emphasized this the most, with the now-iconic villain Vaas alongside the more stereotypical Hoyt. Far Cry 4 and Far Cry 5 leaned into the "insanity" much more with Pagan Min and the Seed family, respectively. Now, Far Cry 6 introduces fans to another new tyrant named Anton Castillo, however Anton's character also introduces a new narrative dynamic never seen in Far Cry: Anton's son, Diego Castillo.
Narratives in recent Far Cry games have focused on placing the villain center stage, but a character relationship like the promising father-son dynamic in Far Cry 6 hasn't been done by the series previously. While Far Cry 5 dealt with a whole extended Seed family, they all largely stayed confined to their respective regions as isolated villains. Diego is an impressionable teenager who, as far as what's been shown publicly so far, isn't a cold-blooded villain just yet. Diego also represents a vulnerability of Anton, as someone Anton would protect vigorously.
Anton Castillo still represents another tyrannical leader in Far Cry 6, and if anything his character design is the most true-to-form "tyrant" compared to any of the previous villains. Tyrant villains in Far Cry have basically become somewhat of a cliché, even as far back as the first two games with the Jackal and Krieger. Far Cry always places the narrative focus on the villain and taking them down, with the typically silent protagonist taking a backseat to the villain's narrative. However this time, Anton's character relationship with Diego could potentially be a very different direction compared to past villains.
Considering the first trailer for the game starts with Anton giving Diego a live grenade in service of a life lesson, it's clear the game is setting up to showcase their relationship throughout Far Cry 6's storyline. Some of that is bolstered by circumstantial evidence too, given that the game will be utilizing third-person cutscenes alongside a non-silent protagonist, and that trailer being "the first of many lessons he's passing down to Diego." Diego's character is "riding the razor's edge" between following in his father's footsteps and becoming his own man, according to the game's narrative director.
Anton's Son, Diego, represents a wholly different character dynamic compared to the totalitarian tyrants in previous Far Cry games. He represents an element of vulnerability for Anton, but also a source of pride and his hard work. Anton is building a future for Diego in the country of Yara, and that relationship will evolve and change as players attempt to revolt against the Castillo's reign. There's a ton of complexity that could come out of Diego's character, as he'll simultaneously witness the fruits of his father's labor whilst also seeing horrible acts of oppression on behalf of his father's tyrannical regime.
On top of all that, with Diego being the impressionable teenager he is, their relationship could change drastically as Far Cry 6 goes on. Will he stand steadfast by his father's side if his oppression is challenged? Can Diego muster the courage to betray his father for the greater good of Yara and the revolution? Presumably, the player's actions will be the catalyst that kicks off those questions in Far Cry 6, meaning players will actively take part in either building or destroying their relationship as the game goes on. It's unclear if this dynamic will be malleable, like if certain actions strengthen or weaken their relationship in-game, but watching that progression may Far Cry 6's most interesting story.
Far Cry is toying with uncharted emotional territory in Far Cry 6, as there's never really been as potentially strong of a relationship between characters like this. Sure, there were elements of familial bonds hinted at in Far Cry 5, but those hints never really manifested into anything impactful by the end of the game. However, tapping into Giancarlo Esposito's acting prowess for Far Cry 6's main villain shows that 2021's entry is not playing around with its characters.
How that relationship ebbs and flows throughout Far Cry 6 will likely be the major focal point of the game's story. The relationship between Anton and Diego provides an interesting element of both complexity and vulnerability for both characters, something players will likely need to exploit to take down Anton's totalitarian regime. Despite being another tyrannical leader, Anton Castillo is not just another stereotypical Far Cry villain. He'll have to battle with burgeoning revolution alongside an impressionable son who's easily susceptible to outside influences that could tear Diego away from Anton.
Far Cry 6 is set to release on February 18, 2021, for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
