Fortnite: How To Become a Shadow | Game Rant
Fans of the hit free-to-play battle royale, Fortnite, have grown used to the increasing presence of superheroes and villains on their radars. That said, with the arrival of fall and pumpkin spice, comes a new set of spooky Halloween-themed gameplay, like the return of Shadow forms.
Epic Games is never shy about changing up the day-to-day in Fortnite. With weekly (and sometimes more) updates and patches to the game, it's no wonder players are constantly in pursuit of new achievements and challenges. It's also no wonder that features are sometimes recycled and revamped, like Shadows.
The concept of a "Shadow" form first debuted in Fortnite Chapter 1 as part of Battle Pass Season 6. Players were able to find "Shadow Stones" scattered about the game's landscapes, which when consumed, allowed access to a Shadow state. In this form, players were invisible when standing still, took no fall damage, moved faster, and jumped higher. They were also unable to use weapons, but could "Phase" through nearby objects in a hurried dash instead. This concept eventually turned into "Shadow Bombs" in May 2019, before entering the Fortnite vault altogether in Season 7.
Shadows are back as part of Fortnitemares 2020, which also reintroduces the nefarious golden Midas as Shadow Midas. This new event allows players to enter the Shadow form much more naturally, though, as players will simply respawn as Shadows once they drop down to 1 HP.
Those who've started taking on the Season 4 Week 9 Challenges may have noticed that part of the Fortnitemares 2020 to-do list simply involves becoming a shadow. As mentioned above, players basically just need to die in-game to "Become a Shadow," so either head into combat, or jump off a tall building, to complete this mission quickly. Note: If players happen to die at the hands of a Shadow, this Challenge does not register as complete.
Once a Shadow, players will remain in their spectral form until the match is over, or until another player depletes their HP again. Shadows have 100 HP, no shield, and can still be killed by players. However, Shadow form has come back to the game with a few new tricks.
Shadows have come to Fortnite Season 4 Week 9 with two new wonderful abilities that give them a bit more agency: Slash and Scream. Slash actually allows Shadows to attack players, which is certainly a new twist to the game. Shadows can't Slash at each other, but they can use this skill to take down remaining players. Scream, on the other hand, allows a Shadow to mark a player, so other nearby Shadows can track them down. Shadows have also been given the ability to consume items like ammo to regenerate their own HP, so overall, the feature has come back with much novelty to offer.
Fortnite is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
