Gearbox CEO Shows Off First Manufactured Copy of Godfall
With the PlayStation 5's launch on November 12 nearing, a series of next-gen milestones are being reached day by day and week by week. For example, last week Sony revealed the inner workings of the PS5 for the first time, and in the next week or so, Sony will likely reveal the PS5's User Interface. Today, another such milestone was reached, though it may be one PlayStation fans are surprised to hear hadn't been reached yet, as the first packaged PS5 retail game was shown online.
Even more surprising than the fact that a retail PS5 game has yet to be sighted is who it is sharing their photos. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford had the pleasure of sharing what they describe as a "hot off the presses" PS5 game. The retail box that Pitchford is sharing with PlayStation fans is for the Gearbox-published action game Godfall, which will be one of the PS5's launch titles. As such, it's understandable why the CEO of the game's publisher would have access to a retail copy.
As for why Pitchford would want to share the copy now that it's in his hands, enthusiasm seems to be the likely cause. Pitchford frames his post on Twitter as a message to "game lovers, peers and enthusiasts." He also uses the tweet to congratulate the developers at Counterplay Games, as well as the publishing team at Gearbo, so there's also clearly a level of marketing and promotion to the message, too. After all, there's only one first retail PS5 game shared publically.
Four different photos are shared in Pitchford's tweet. One of himself holding the box up with a goofy look on his face, one each of the box face and back, and the last shows the box opened with all of Godfall's DLC redemption codes and contents. The only thing out of place is that Pitchford seems notably shiny and/or damp in the first photo.
There's also an additional element to the photo that's particularly interesting, that being that for the first time in over 20 years, a disc-based game will retail for $69.99. Some SNES and N64 games reached as high as $69.99 in the 90s before disc-based games dropped prices significantly. Though this edition of Godfall isn't even the $69.99 version, it's the $99.99 Ascended Edition of Godfall. As should be clear, the price hike will not be leading to anything impressive with regards to the box or its physical contents.
Odds are, PlayStation fans are going to see a lot more PS5 retail boxes starting relatively soon. Whether Godfall was the first fans saw isn't so big of a deal, but it's just another opportunity for PlayStation fans to share in the excitement of the pending next-generation console launch.
