Godfall Video Details Loot and Progression System | Game Rant

A loot-based game like Godfall lives or dies depending on how it balances its myriad customization options with the effort required to unlock them and their long-term value. Unfortunately, there has been a concerning lack of information about Godfall’s loot system, as developer Counterplay Games has been focusing more on showing off the game’s combat and world ahead of launch. The good news, however, is that the developer has finally remedied that with a deep dive into the game’s approach to character progression.

IGN released a new video today after speaking with Counterplay’s senior technical producer Richard Heyne. It offers several first looks at the upcoming looter-slasher's inventory menus, as well as a new skill grid where players will be able to further customize their Valorian Knights. In the process, Heyne also explained how the game is being designed to be “the tinkerer’s dream,” allowing players to experiment with their loot and character builds and “see the impact immediately.”

The main goal that Counterplay is aiming for with the loot system is giving players plenty of ways to mix and match their arsenal of Valorplates, weapons, augments, and more without holding up Godfall’s fast-paced gameplay. For instance, crafting will be as streamlined as possible while also allowing for multiple upgrade options for loot, including leveling up a piece of loot and even boosting it to the next rarity level. This will ensure that if a player finds a favorite piece of gear among the game’s large selection, they’ll be able to keep it with them throughout the entire campaign.

This mentality also extends to the skill grid, which IGN notes is separate from the constellation-like skill trees that Counterplay has already shown. The grid is being designed for “maximal flexibility,” which means Godfall players will be able to carry skill points from one Valorplate to another and respec builds instantly. This will keep them from being tied down to any particular playstyle based on their initial upgrade choices.

Overall, Counterplay is striving to make sure the game respects players’ time across the board with its loot system. It’s common for loot-based games to lock key loot and crafting materials behind side-activities that players usually have to grind through, and Heyne stressed that the studio is trying to mitigate that. While certain items needed to craft things like new Valorplates will only be available in certain parts of the game’s world, players will, for the most part, be able to naturally find these items while they make their way through the campaign missions and Godfall’s endgame content.

“One of our core philosophies will always be the tinkerer's dream,” Heyne said. “If there's the appetite for that, for the player to continue experimenting, we want to just make sure that the playground's open and you're ready to play.”

Godfall will launch on November 12 for PC and PS5.
