Rumor: Xbox News Coming Monday | Game Rant

Microsoft has capitalized on the attention it received due to the November launch announcement for its Xbox Series X. Whether it's the continued acquisitions of game studios like Bethesda or the launch of a cloud streaming service called xCloud, big announcements keep coming. It seems more news may be coming soon as Geoff Keighley, host of The Game Awards, dropped a hint that the Xbox team may have more news to share on Monday, October 5.

The Xbox team is currently holding a charity livestream for Game Pink, a fundraising initiative for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Keighley is hosting the event, and conducted an interview with Xbox marketing GM Aaron Greenberg. During this interview, Keighley teased Greenberg, as well as viewers, by saying, "I heard a rumor you're going to have a blog post coming out on Monday."

The context of Keighley's comment makes it a bit more eyebrow-raising. He talked to Greenberg about Xbox's big year and frames his rumor around comments regarding hype surrounding the Xbox Series X. He said Xbox has lots of games coming out, then later said there's lots of excitement about all things Xbox. In so many words, he's framing the rumor as if it's big news, or at least news that Xbox fans may be excited to hear more about.

Keighley is an industry insider, and often has access to all manner of embargo and NDA information, so he likely wouldn't be teasing anything that hasn't been approved by Xbox ahead of time. It's also noteworthy that Greenberg laughs at Keighley's comment, but doesn't revisit the topic once Keighley moves past it.

Such an open-ended rumor is designed to breed speculation, so it's no surprise that a variety of possibilities about Xbox's news are already being considered. Speculation includes the confirmation of previous rumors like Xbox announcing xCloud for iOS, the end of Xbox Live Gold subscriptions currently required to play online games, another new studio acquisition, or a big game announcement.

It should be noted that while Keighley is historically a reliable source, and that Microsoft does tend to make its announcements on Mondays, this is still a rumor. It may have simply been Keighley making a joke, or the announcement could be something small that may have otherwise flown under the radar. Until Monday, it's probably best for Xbox fans to keep their expectations managed.

The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S launch November 10.
