Skyrim: 10 Of The Craziest Things You Never Knew About Vaermina
Daedric Princes play a pivotal role in Skyrim and the Elder Scrolls as a whole. Each one has unique history, motivations, personality, and relationship with the mortal world. The Dragonborn will have an opportunity to interact with most Daedric Princes in their adventure through Skyrim.
One of the most captivating Princes is Vaermina. While the Dragonborn has the opportunity to pursue a quest that heavily involves Vaermina, there is a lot of information regarding this demonic Oblivion dweller most players miss.
10 Daedric Prince Of Nightmares
Vaermina's areas of influence include nightmares, evil omens, lost memories, and other forms of psychological torment. She uses her powers to influence these phenomena in the mortal world, where these troubles and toils can be found, there is a good chance Vaermina is to blame. Showing that Daedra can cause much more than just physical pain and suffering.
9 Physical Appearance
Vaermina does not make a physical appearance in the Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, and the player only has a chance at brief communication with her disembodied voice. A description of the Daedra's appearance can be found however, describing her as looking like a stereotypical female mage. Indeed, Vaermina's statue carries this appearance, occasionally with a monstrous head, and with her carrying serpents in both arms.
8 Plane Of Oblivion
Vaermina rules over the Quagmire plane of Oblivion. This realm has been described as a series of horrifying and repetitive nightmares that change at every lightning strike. The nightmares and visions are personalized, playing off whatever the unfortunate soul in her realm fears the most. Certainly a far cry from some of Skyrim's more idyllic locations.
7 Pure Evil
While most Daedra are in fact, inherently evil, this is not necessarily true for most Daedric Princes. Most are more likely to be morally ambiguous, and at best indifferent to human suffering.
Few can be considered as evil as Vaermina. In almost each title Vaermina has appeared in, instigating and prolonging mortal suffering has seemed to be her only goal.
6 Connection To Magnus
Vaermina is believed to have a deep connection to Magnus. Magnus is considered to be the key source of magic in the Elder Scrolls universe. Magnus is one of the original spirits which was involved in the conflict that lead to the creation of Nirn. Many believe that magicka is a byproduct of Magnus'.
The connection between the god of magic, and the Daedric Prince of nightmares is never fully explained nor explored upon. However it can be assumed that this is where Vaermina gets much of her power and inception-like abilities.
5 Connection To Molag Bal And The Cure For Vampirism
It would seem that some good can indeed come from a purely evil deity. Vampires are universally considered to be some of the most dangerous monsters in all of fantasy. When Molag Bal, the Daedric Prince credited for creating Vampires, was seeking a cure for his engineered ailment, he received this information from Vaermina herself. While her motivations may never be truly known, and based on her history, most likely were not for the betterment of mortals, this helped make the world of Nirn a much less dangerous place.
4 Skull Of Corruption
Vaermina would not be a noteworthy Daedric Prince if she did not come with her own powerful and unique artifact. Vaermina's is known as the Skull of Corruption.
This is a staff that is powered by the dreams of sleeping victims, the more dreams it has been charged with, the more damage it can deal. A nifty and interesting weapon for the Dragonborn to collect on their adventure.
3 Preys On The People Of Dawnstar
Vaermina's artifact, the Skull of Corruption, has set up camp in a tower overlooking the town of Dawnstar. The staff has been siphoning the dreams of the people of the town and giving them nightmares. If the Dragonborn is brave enough they can, with the assistance of a priest of Mara, go and eradicate this threat.
2 Lies To the Dragonborn
After clearing out the tower the Dragonborn and priest will break the seal of the Skull of Corruption, freeing the people of Dawnstar. following this the Dragonborn has an important choice to make, kill Erandur the priest and take the staff, or let him perform a ritual to eradicate it once and for all. At this point Vaermina will speak to the Dragonborn, informing him that Erandur plans on turning on the Dragonborn. If the player does not heed her warning Erandur will in fact not do so, and will even be recruit-able as a companion, showing that Vaermina, was in fact, lying.
1 Is Not Mentioned In The Lore Very Often
While there are many interesting facts about Vaermina to discover, the player can be forgiven for not knowing them. Vaermina is, compared to other Daedric Princes, not as popularly mentioned in the lore of Skyrim. While she does have a major quest, information about the Prince is difficult to come by, and players would have to play a full time role as a Vaermina researcher to make these discoveries. It seems Vaermina does not want mortals to know too much about her, as the air of mystery plays in her favor.
