Sonic the Hedgehog Games Get Huge Sale On Steam | Game Rant
Sega has heavily discounted over a dozen Sonic the Hedgehog games on Steam for a limited time. As part of Sega's 60th anniversary celebration, the sale takes 75 percent or more off the prices of some of the hedgehog's most iconic titles.
Even though the Sonic the Hedgehog movie became a surprise success early this year, 2020 has been slow for Sonic. No games have released this year, and upcoming titles have been teased but not officially announced. This means Sonic fans have only gotten minor news updates like a leaked Sonic the Hedgehog skin for Fall Guys. However, that makes this a great time to catch up on the Blue Blur's legacy, and fans can do just that thanks to the Steam sale.
The Sonic sale will run until October 19, giving players time to decide which games they want. As far as Sonic the Hedgehog's 2D sidescrollers go, each of the franchise's main Genesis games (including Sonic 1, 2, CD, and the two-game compilation 3 & Knuckles) are now available for under two dollars, with Sonic 2 being free. The same goes for spin-offs Sonic Spinball and Sonic 3D Blast.
The most deeply-discounted 3D Sonic games are Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut and Sonic Adventure 2, both available for less than three dollars. Although fans disagree regarding the best Sonic Adventure game, having both on sale makes it easy for players to decide for themselves.
Newcomers to the Sonic franchise may be unsure where to start, but there are a few good options. Those looking to try a 2D Sonic game may start with Sonic Mania, the highly successful retro revival from 2017, which is on sale for five dollars. Those who like what they play can also access the game's DLC add-on, Sonic Mania Plus, for a little over two dollars. As far as 3D Sonic games go, a popular option is Sonic Generations, an anniversary title from 2011 with a time-travel theme.
It's important to note that many Sonic games are not available on Steam, and therefore are not included in the sale. This includes some infamous titles (such as Sonic the Hedgehog 2006) and some well-regarded games (such as the Sonic Advance trilogy). Fans will need to put more effort into playing these games, such as finding the original hardware and cartridges.
In addition to the company's 60th anniversary, Sega is getting ready to celebrate another major milestone: The Sonic franchise's 30th anniversary. Sega has indicated that major announcements are in store, so with luck new fans who use the Steam sale to explore the franchise will discover they have new games to look forward to in the near future.
