Sony in 'Good Position' to Purchase WB Games, Says Analyst

Not too long ago, news came out that Microsoft purchased Bethesda for over seven billion dollars. This acquisition gives the company the rights to popular gaming franchises such as DOOM, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and other successful AAA titles. Ever since the announcement, some have wondered if Sony could make a purchase just as significant as Microsoft's.

Gaming industry analyst Michael Pachter believes that a good response to the Microsoft deal would be for Sony to purchase WB Games. Speaking with news outlet Gamingbolt, Patcher said he believes that Sony would be in a "good position" to buy out WB games if AT&T ever decided to put it back up on the market.

AT&T put WB Games up for sale earlier this year, and Microsoft was one of the companies at the front of the line to grab it. However, when AT&T's former COO John Stankey became the company's CEO, AT&T took WB Games off of the table, claiming that it was too valuable to be sold away. Now that Bethesda has sold for $7.5 billion, Pachter thinks AT&T might be willing to sell WB if it could for the right price.

Pachter believes that WB series like Batman and Mortal Kombat would be a good fit for Sony. Of course, AT&T would have to perpetually sell rights to these games for the deal to work in Sony's favor. If AT&T decided only to license out the IPs, then Sony would miss out on the exclusivity advantage it would need to match the Microsoft and Bethesda deal.

It's too early to say whether Sony buying out WB Games would be a strong answer to Microsoft obtaining Bethesda. That said, Mortal Kombat is a popular franchise, and everything with Batman's name on it tends to do fairly well for itself. A WB Games purchase would also give Sony exclusive access to the Hitman series, and even potentially the upcoming Harry Potter RPG, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Legacy, which fans have been anticipating for some time.

At this point, time will tell how the Microsoft/Bethesda deal will work out for everyone. It's definitely a win on Microsoft's side, namely because one of the biggest critiques of the Xbox Series X is that it lacked exclusives. Now that Microsoft has Bethesda, that critique should mostly dissipate, and it would behoove PlayStation to figure out a way it can continue to compete with its console rival.
