Xbox Brazil Fires Host After She Receives Threats for Working There
Ex-Xbox Host and Twitch streamer/content creator Isadora Basile has announced her departure from Xbox in a brief tweet. The host had endured ongoing harassment since beginning her work with Xbox Brazil, and it seems that after deliberation, the company has decided to proceed with the situation by simply firing her.
Isadora Basile is a self-described Xbox presenter, content creator, and singer, as per her Twitch profile. The gamer and host streams to a sizable audience of 11,000+ subscribers, and is known for her forays into League of Legends, PUBG, and Overwatch.
She started working with Xbox right around September of this year, and confirms that she began to incur "all sorts of attacks" shortly upon announcing her position with the company. In her tweet, Basile explains that these attacks ranged from trollish harassment, to full-on death threats. While some people have told her she doesn't deserve the position "because she doesn't play X or Y game," other strangers have gone so far as sending her death and rape threats.
In this same tweet, Basile thanks her family, friends, and lover, for helping her learn how to deal with these forms of assault "like [she does with] the passing of time." She also confirms that the harassment never really let down, which seems to have influenced Xbox Brazil's decision-making process.
As per Basile, due to all of the attacks, "Microsoft found, as best option, to release [her] from the position of host, so as to avoid further exposure to situations like these." Basile followed up with a brief conclusion, stating her respect for Microsoft's decision, and reaffirming her continued love of Xbox/Microsoft and their games.
Basile's gracious resignation aside, fans are quickly posting in defense of the up-and-coming gamer. The "do you Really play video games?" jeer generally attempts to imply that girl gamers don't actually care about video games, and simply want to use them as social props (because they're women, which is of course a ludicrous notion) - needless to say, most female gamers are no stranger to this jeer, and Basile's case is a prime example of real-world casualties that can result from these toxic behaviors.
The fact that Microsoft has chosen to fire Basile for these incidents simply doesn't seem to make any sense to many fans, especially when considering things under the light of justice. The Xbox Host persevered through the beginnings of her new job, even in the face of harassment, insults, and threats. Being an Xbox Host may mean she doesn't receive those same threats anymore, but it also means an implicit victory for her abusers. When critics are groundlessly shouting "She's unqualified for the job!" it's difficult to imagine how firing her seemed like an acceptably supportive response.
