AEW Has Multiple Video Games in the Works, Says Tony Kahn
All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has been tantalizing its fans with details about a potential video game announcement for a while, a wrestling game akin to No Mercy rather than WWE 2K20. Finally, after months of waiting, AEW announced that it will make a video game announcement later this week. However, many AEW fans, as well as fans of wrestling games, may not have been prepared for AEW owner Tony Khan to offhandedly confirm there are actually multiple games in development.
Khan answered a variety of questions during a media scrum following Saturday night's Full Gear Pay-Per-View event. One question revolved around AEW's future video game plans. Khan said AEW is working on "multiple games," then later confirmed that there will be "a few different titles," the clear message being that AEW is working on several upcoming games.
Khan also went into some detail about what kind of games AEW is working on, though these had previously been discussed between Khan, Kenny Omega, and other AEW staff. The first is a highly-anticipated major console AEW game. Khan describes this as a "best in class" type of game, and notably doesn't call it a AAA title. However, AEW clearly has high expectations for it.
The second game is a type of general managing game that allows players to, as Khan describes, put "wrestling cards up together." It'll put players in the role of a Khan-like GM, where they can book shows with their favorite wrestlers. AEW has filed a trademark registration for the title "All Elite Wrestling: Elite General Manager," listed as a term for downloadable video game software to use on mobile devices or handheld computers.
As for what other games AEW might be working on, time will tell. All Khan adds is that AEW is working on games designed to "cater to different platforms," so further games could be for PC, console, or mobile devices. Khan points to an AEW Games reveal event this upcoming Thursday for more information.
One thing Khan makes clear is that AEW is dedicated to making games. It's going to start with a few titles and then expand, with Khan saying, "I don't think we're going to stop anywhere, either." Khan sees wrestling video games as an opportunity to both build AEW and introduce new fans to the company. "We have some big surprises to come in 2020," he said, but it sounds like there is plenty more to come from All Elite Wrestling in 2021 and beyond, too.
