Amazon Reveals its Top Selling Games of the Year | Game Rant
As one of the world's largest retailers, it is always eye-opening whenever Amazon reveals its yearly video game sales. In many ways, it shows what gamers have been most interested in throughout the year. As Amazon just released the 2020 numbers for the US and the UK, Nintendo showed up big, as did Cyberpunk 2077 and FIFA 21.
The biggest seller in both the US and UK should not be a surprise. It was Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and it broke records across the world. New Horizons dominated in a year in which gamers appreciated a video game that allowed them to explore the great outdoors, socialize with friends, collect critters, and appreciate some good-natured and fun-loving activities. The retail version of New Horizons took the number one spot on the list, and the digital version took the number five spot.
The second best game in the US was also from Nintendo, the well-received Super Mario 3D-All Stars. One thing that could be adding to the sales is the limited-timed nature of the game. The title will no longer be for sale come March 31, 2021, so any Nintendo fan interesting in the title needed to act fast. The next few games on the list were more Nintendo games, albeit ones that came out years ago in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at number three and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at number four.
The first non-Nintendo on the US list is Cyberpunk 2077 at number six, perhaps the biggest game, but also the biggest controversy of 2020. To crack the top ten list while only being released in the final month of the year is very impressive. Of course, it is likely that pre-orders had something to do with this, with so many purchases coming months in advance. The only other non-Nintendo game on the US list is The Last of Us Part 2, which came in at number nine.
Between the US and UK list, Nintendo dominated as a whole. Previously mentioned Nintendo games crossed over on both lists, but Ring Fit Adventure, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Just Dance 2021 (Switch), and the Switch version of Minecraft all made appearances.
The final UK list was a bit more diversified. The best selling game was indeed Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but the number two game was FIFA 21, and with sales being so high, two versions of the game cracked the top ten (PS4 and Xbox One). Meanwhile, The Last of Us Part 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 also made the UK list. Two versions of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla finished off the top 10. The full list is as follows:
