Avatar 2: James Cameron Releases Final Set Photos of 2020
Avatar 2 is a movie many people may have forgotten was coming out. However, judging by the enduring popularity of the Pandora section in Disney World's Animal Kingdom, as well as some newly released set photos, it is clearly still on its way and aiming to impress audiences once again.
One might wonder what the set photos look like for a film where the vast majority involves big, computer-generated aliens and digitally created environments. The answer is there's a lot of blue, but that doesn't mean it's all there is. Blue screens are just one filmmaking tool of the many being utilized by James Cameron and his team for this sequel.
One image notably displays an interesting camera rig. According to Cameron, this is "three Technocranes and a Russian Arm mounted on top of a Mercedes-Benz." The shot comes complete with close-ups on the brand names of each piece of gear, in case any fans are in the market for some gigantic robot arms. While the exact use of this mechanical monster isn't specified, it must be a useful setup for a kinetic franchise like Avatar. A regular camera on a dolly just wouldn't cut it for the man who made an entire movie to finance his expedition to the Titanic wreck.
The other picture shows off an impressive little practical set. This aquatic command center, which Cameron calls "The Matador," sits on a motion-controlled base and is likely to be home to some tense action, judging by the imposing turret at the top. More blue screens surround the set, which makes sense considering it wouldn't be practical to flood the room for a few river shots.
Cameron has always been one to go one step further with his filmmaking. From the massive sets of Titanic to the groundbreaking visual effects of the first Avatar, his productions always tend to be memorable for one reason or another. While these set photos may not show off any landmarks of production or visuals, they may help connect fans with the out-of-this-world scale they've come to expect. There's no guarantee of the quality of the movie, but it's clear from these shots that Cameron and his crew are still putting in as much effort as they always have, and that's got to count for something.
Fans still have two years to wait while anticipation grows, and there are sure to be plenty more behind-the-scenes images revealed in the interim. It looks like patience is the name of the game for now, but hopefully these photos help tide people over in the meantime.
Avatar 2 is currently in production.
