Call of Duty: Warzone - How to Play Rebirth Island | Game Rant
Call of Duty: Warzone introduced “Rebirth Island,” a new map and gameplay mode that brings chaotic firefights, and a new method for teammate revival, to one of the top 10 multiplayer games of 2020. With the game already offering plenty of variety, some gamers want to know how to access and play in this new war zone.
To play Rebirth Island, players must navigate to the “Play” tab for Call of Duty: Warzone, and select the “Resurgence Trios” playlist. The game will team players up with two others, and drop them down onto the island. However, this first drop may confuse newcomers; players aren’t in the fight yet, but can run and gun (harmlessly) while the lobby is filled with other teams. Once enough players have been teamed up in the lobby, players are alerted that the match is starting, and the opening cinematic begins. Players can jump when they’re ready, and will skydive down on to the small, urban setting where firefights are no longer harmless.
The premise of the Rebirth Island game mode is a spin on the standard Call of Duty: Warzone concept. If players are taken out while the Rebirth Countdown is active, they can be returned to the fight, as long as a teammate survives the countdown. In most game modes, if a player is killed, they're transported to a gulag - like the one created by a fan in Unreal Engine 4 - where they fight a single enemy player. The winner would be returned to the battle-at-large.
The Rebirth Countdown makes for a chaotic interaction, as players are incentivized to be more aggressive. Loot contracts and loadout boxes attract players to specific areas, while the promise of wiping out an enemy team tempts players into hunting down survivors - all while the standard ring of death closes in, constricting the map area. When the Attack Helicopter is added to the game, the play area will become even more claustrophobic.
Of course, being the last teammate alive can promote a desire to stay out of sight, but as the play area shrinks, there are fewer places to hide. This seems to create a negative feedback loop that motivates players to jump into the action and hope for the best. This is particularly true when the Rebirth Countdown is no longer active, meaning the team won’t re-spawn anyway. Perhaps this, combined with the small map, make the knife a great option, as the latest patch notes don't indicate that melee attacks have been balanced. Once a team has been eliminated, those players can spectate, wait for the end of the match and continue playing, or they can choose to leave the match and return to the lobby.
Battle royale games are ubiquitous - with the game mode even being added to Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? - so new iterations on the concept are necessary to keep the genre thriving. Rebirth Island is both a tense, new setting and interesting, new game mode. Fans of battle royale games might enjoy the chaotic gameplay that stems from the Rebirth Countdown, which can mean more time spent fighting on the ground than waiting in a lobby.
Call of Duty: Warzone is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
