Free Fire Battle Royale Game Adds Cristiano Ronaldo As Playable Character
The battle royale has quickly become one of the more popular genres in video games. Soccer, or Football in most places, is the most popular sport in the world. So with a recent crossover in the mobile game Free Fire, the two have been combined.
Free Fire may not be the first game mentioned when thinking of the best battle royale games, but it is sure doing something exciting to try to get its name out there. The mobile title has recruited a soccer player that many consider to be the best, Cristiano Ronaldo, as a playable character in the game, and he will arrive on December 19, 2020.
The reveal came with a rather silly and fun YouTube video. Ronaldo is seen kicking a soccer ball in frustration as he dies over and over in Free Fire. The Juventus star then makes a quick phone call to Garena, the publisher of Free Fire. He then stoically says on the phone, "initiate Operation Chrono."
Operation Chrono is more than Ronaldo simply being in the game, as there will be an entire in-game universe built around the player. The update has cyberpunk vibes, giving new life to a game that is popular in Asia but looking to expand worldwide. It will be interesting to see if Operation Chrono and Ronaldo will add some excitement and more players to Free Fire.
The battle royale genre is quite stuffed on mobile, so finding ways to stand out takes some creativity. While Fortnite is adding the likes of Kronos, Free Fire is mixing it up with an all-time soccer star.
