Koei Tecmo Hit by Cyberattack, Shuts Down Official Website
Koei Tecmo has been hit by a cyberattack, and subsequently has temporarily shut down its official website. Reportedly, 65,000 accounts have been compromised.
The European branch of Koei Tecmo's site is the specific section that was hit with the attack. In a press release that was sent out today, December 29, Koei Tecmo confirmed that forum information login details of around 65,000 accounts were leaked. The good news is that it appears credit card information does not appear to be a part of the leaked information, nor does customer or employee info. However, forum member account names, passwords (in an encrypted state), and mail addresses were leaked.
The full details of the cyberattack are not yet known. It could be that the account information is all that was compromised, but the Capcom cyberattack started out as an attack and ended up being perhaps one of the biggest leaks in gaming history. The trickle effect has continued throughout the weeks and months after the initial attack, with dataminers sifting through the information to this day. It is possible that Koei Tecmo's data and plans will be found out moving forward thanks to this hit, of course, the higher-ups in the company will hope that is not the case.
For now, Koei Tecmo seems to have acted rather quickly in responding to the attack. If anyone were to visit the American or European site, they will receive a message that explains that Koei Tecmo had to temporarily close the website due to an external cyberattack. Koei Tecmo, who most recently helped in developing the very successful Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, is advising anyone with an account to update their passwords as soon as possible.
Koei Tecmo has a library of pretty good games, and this attack obviously shouldn't take away from that. It should certainly be the job of the developer/publisher to build a secure network, but even the best websites get attacks.
Cyberattacks targeting game companies likely won't be going anywhere, with even Bethesda being attacked a few years ago, and the infamous PSN cyberattack in 2011 being perhaps the highest-profile case in gaming history. It is important to try to have a secure network, but it is almost impossible to be impenetrable.
Whether it be story or gameplay elements in video games, like that of Cyberpunk 2077, cyber attacks are often a part of video games. But in real life, it is no joke. The security of video game companies and the individuals who entrust their personal information to those companies is very important. Hopefully, Koei Tecmo can wrap up this issue sooner rather than later.
